All Movie Guide
Life is Beautiful caused more than a little controversy when it was released: any attempt to make comedy out of the Holocaust is going to inspire strong reactions from critics and audience members. Love it or loathe it, Life is Beautiful inarguably made an international star out of Italian comedian Roberto Benigni, who wrote, directed, and starred in it. One of his country's most celebrated comedians, Benigni was previously known for his work in numerous Italian comedies, as well as Johnny Stecchino and Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law and Night on Earth. Life is Beautiful's Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by Benigni's Best Actor Oscar and acceptance speech (in exuberant, skillfully broken English), made Benigni possibly Italy's most famous export since the Fiat. Although some viewers found the film's second half, set almost entirely in a concentration camp, to be well-meaning but misguided, the film's first half is indisputably enjoyable. Revolving around the courtship of an aristocratic lady nicknamed the Principessa by Benigni's Guido, it makes a refreshing, elegantly hilarious love story. Somewhat ironically, the film's wittiest and most accurate commentary on fascism and religious oppression is contained here, rather than in the concentration camp setting. Benigni's comedy here becomes a tool for side-splitting yet razor-sharp criticism, and this first section powerfully establishes the reality of everyday life disrupted by the war.

This uplifting story chronicles one man's struggle to keep the smiles on his young son's face amidst the tragedy and suffering they must endure as Jews during World War Two. Roberto Benigni is terriffic as he cleverly weaves a tale of laughter, suspense, and heartbreak into a must-see for the whole family. I love this movie! :o)

One of the best movies I have ever seen, it is a tribute to the power of the human spirit and the gift of free will that resides in each of us. When I started watching it, I knew nothing about it except that it came highly recommended. What a journey from the fluffy beginning to the whallop-packing end.

This movie took my breath away. I have no other words to describe it.

This is a wonderful movie ever. It showed that when things or in this case war. You have to be strong and try to make it better for you and your family. That's what Roberto Benigni was showing his son. I enjoyed this movie a lot.

We watched this movie in English class and a lot of my classmates loved it, including me. It's funny and sad all at once and will totally touch your heart.

This film does not lighten the facts of what was occurring, but rather shows the depths that a father will go to in order to care for his son's well-being. It also makes one realize that within every situation, there is something in us that should reflect some flicker of hope because, as the title states, life IS beautiful and we should not take that for granted.

i saw this film during a period of watching sad films, they're aren't words to describe how moving this film was and how it manages to make the viewer both laugh and cry. It really manages to touch your heart and think about life and indeed how beatuiful it is. I would recommend this film to everyone.

The story is just so amazing and what is even better is the acting. An amazing showing of love; you will fall in love with the characters and feel with them.

This movie is probably the best foriegn film I have ever seen. It's a VERY funny movie. But the dying love of a family doing anything for each other makes it a tear jerker.

After seeing this movie with my classmates I discovered that you have to live every moment of your life like it's your last day.

I am not a sappy person and do not usually cry during movies. In fact, up until I saw this movie there was only one movie that could make me cry. This movie touched me so much! It's funny but inspiring and it shows the great lengths we go to to protect others.

This movie is indeed awesome!!!! As I watched this beautiful work of art, the whole time the only words that my lips were uttering were wwow, woww, and wwowww. I was left in tears by the end of the movie and they were tears of joy. there is an innocence, a purity, and a peace about this movie that is so unique and I relish in it everytime I see it. if you want to experience love and possibly GOD in a work of human imagination, please, go ahead and feed your eyes with its images

This movie was beyond words. The best man can ever come up with to describe it is the title, LIfe is Beautiful. Be prepared to sob your heart out...

In this movie you are introduced to a man who outshines the sun even in the darkest of places. Through thick and thin his outlook on life is that it is beautiful. And even though what he goes through could be described as the worst thing ever to happen, he will live to make someone smile. Life Is Beautiful will bring laughter, tears, and a humbleness to you like nothing else. Hope you enjoy this classic!

We watched this movie in English class to learn about existentialism. Well, I didn't do much of that worksheet, but I did watch the movie. And I thought it was unbelievable... this movie is so frank and simple, yet so touching. Anyone who hasn't seen it... you must! This movie also gives an excellent portrayal of parents, and what they sacrifice for their children. Now I know what I want on my birthday list.

I loved this movie. I watched it in my world history class and have since rented it to show my boyfriend. He was skeptical on the movie, and after seeing it said it was one of the best foreign movies he's seen. I do not cry in movies (no, not even the Notebook), and this movie made me cry. It was so good! And so sweet and cute. The perfect movie for a movie night at home.

I love this movie! I saw this in my Theology class and at first, I was a little wary with this subject after viewing Scheindler's List, but after the end of this movie, I fell in love with it. I love it! Love it, love it, LOVE IT! I highly recommend this movie.

Totally like, but unlike Schindler's List! The movie portrayed life during the Holocaust and the struggle of a parent to keep his innocent son's mind, just that, innocent. I, too am a parent and I would imagine had I lived in that era, I would do my very best for my children not to see the true ugliness of our situation and paint them a picture of how beautiful life can be. This movie just stole my heart and made me cry shamelessly. I love it.

I watched this in my English 10 class and our teacher made us watch it in Italian with the english subtitles and i loved it. Now I would never watch it in English because it ruins it. If you buy this, watch it in Italian, it's much more fun!

I saw this movie when it came out in 1997 when I was on vacation with my family. I loved the movie!! It was funny because I was amazed at how much I understood without reading the subtitles because I speak spanish. I thought it was sooo cool. I taped it when I saw it on TV in both English and Italian. I only love watching it in Italian though. Overall I love the entire movie, the humor, suspense, and drama in the movie. I thought the little boy was adorable too. Bonjourno principessa!! I love that. Anyways, it was a great movie!! I highly recommend it.
