Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
Though well-intentioned and invested with a certain rough-edged charm, this hardscrabble coming-out drama suffers from an overwrought script and a dearth of in-depth character development. Roger Daltrey makes a convincing enough Fagan figure, while real-life boxer Steve Bell capably embodies the testosterone-laced confusion of a working-class athlete struggling with his sexual identity. But Ian Rose's record producer and Dani Behr's disco dolly are clubland cyphers straight from central casting. These characters would seem more rounded if they appeared in a five-minute Pet Shop Boys video than they do at the end of this full-length feature. In the end, writer/director Paul Oremland and his screenwriting team don't know how to fashion much of a compelling story from their admittedly novel situations. The underground boxing milieu seems to be thrown in simply to add "realness" to the proceedings, while the romance between Matt and Craig is a workaday variation on A Star Is Born. Like It Is may offer an antidote to mainstream gay-movie blandness, but the cure is just as bad as the illness itself. Jonathan Harvey's Beautiful Thing and the original BBC series Queer As Folk treated similar subject matter with far more depth and sensitivity.
