Overview

Based on the best-selling novel by Laura Esquival, this internationally popular romantic fable from Mexico centers on a young woman who discovers that her cooking has magical effects. The tale's heroine, Tita, is the youngest of three daughters in a traditional Mexican family. Bound by tradition to remain unmarried while caring for her aging mother, Tita nevertheless falls in love with a handsome young man named Pedro. Pedro returns her affection, but he cannot overcome her family's disapproval, and he instead marries Tita's elder sister. The lovestruck young woman is brutally disappointed, and her sadness has such force that it infects her cooking: all who eat it her feel her heartbreak with the same intensity. This newly discovered power continues to manifest itself after the wedding, as Tita and Pedro, overcome by their denied love, embark on a secret affair. Director Alfonso Arau, Esquival's husband at the time, presents the acts of love and cooking with the same glossy, sensual sheen. Indeed, despite occasional digressions into a magical realist tone, the film often takes on the gloss of Hollywood romance. This combination of traditional melodrama and exotic fairy tale proved extremely popular with audiences, particularly in the United States, where it became one of the highest grossing foreign language films at the time.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Karen Backstein
Mexican director Alfonso Arau hit upon a recipe for success when he whipped up this tasty mixture of magical realism and spicy romanticism. An art house favorite based on a novel by Arau's then-wife Laura Esquivel, Like Water for Chocolate traces the unusual aftermath of a love affair thwarted by an old Mexican custom. Because she is the youngest daughter in her family, Tita Lumi Cavazos must renounce her beloved and remain forever single, in order to devote herself solely to her mother's care. But Tita's repressed passion comes out in her cooking, and all who partake of her luscious dishes find themselves deeply and erotically affected. The film's atmospheric photography by Steven Bernstein and Emmanuel Lubezki evokes a world gloriously transformed by the power of food and desire. Clever and enchanting Like Water for Chocolate is a delicious fairytale that owes as much to Federico Garcia Lorca as it does to Romeo and Juliet.
All Movie Guide - Andrea LeVasseur
Beautifully executed in the Latin storytelling tradition of magic realism, Like Water for Chocolate is a romantic drama that ultimately falls back into a Cinderella myth. Director Alfonso Arau shows the domestic chores and duties of the ranch with a commonplace realism, occasionally lapsing into fantasy sequences for the surreal events that are being cooked up. In one instance, the long-suffering Tita (Lumi Cavazos) rides away with a mile-long blanket dragging behind her, a product of her lovesick nights spent knitting. The mother is appropriately wicked, as is the sister, and Tita views her prince charming, Pedro (Mario Leonardi), as the only escape from her lifelong servitude. Like the oven-warmed kitchen where most of the action is set, the photography is warm and glowing. The connection between food and sex is well developed, in several banquets and dinners proving both memorable and humorous. Filled with characters simmering with passion and jealousy, Like Water for Chocolate lives up to its title, which refers to a method of making hot cocoa by adding chocolate to boiling water. Although heavier topics such as death, ghosts, and revolutionary war arise, the story is overall lighthearted and adheres to Hollywood romantic sensibilities.

The movie as originally shown is a true work of art. However,

The movie as originally shown is a true work of art. However, the 105 minute and 113 minute DVDs, which omit 15% of the original content, leave a lot to be desired.

Hopefully, someone will produce a DVD of the movie as originally released.

    Unbelievable!!

I am currently reading LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE at the moment for the 5th time and still I find the majestic tale of two young lovers forced apart because of idiotic tradition that should have never come into existence in the firsr place. Pedro and Tita's undying love for each other is on of the most miraculous emotions I have ever sensed. While reading it felt like I could feel the passion, sorrow, loss, joy, jealousy, lust, and vengence tyhat the chaarcters feel. This book is truly a " everyone must read" book. As well you learn some life lessons, as well as so recipes that can ease that soul.

    True love at its best

This movie is such an amazing, beautiful story. It expresses such raw, true emotion, it is hard not to be moved by this. This is a must see and certainly a must own. The cast could not have been better. If you think about many aspects of this story, they are unbelievable. This story makes the heart believe them in an instant.

    Great movie!

My husband and I were on our honeymoon. The Inn that we stayed at had several movies to borrow for our stay. Figuring that it was our honeymoon and that I wasn't much into foriegn or subtitle movies, we took it not expecting to watch it. Literally, we sat down and we never left our chairs! After it was done we both said, "wow, that was really good." We haven't seen it since, but we bring it up every now and then that we'd like to see it again. We've been married for over 10 years now and I am going to get it for him for our next anniversary! This movie drew us and captured us. It's a "must see" for everyone, at least once!!

    Representative

I was really impressed by this movie. I really connected with the characters, especially with Tita. I feel that, even though exagerated, the hispanic culture is represented. I find that the relationsip between Elena and Tita can be shared by many mothers and daughters.

    Culture at it's best!

Probably the most powerful cultural movie I've ever seen in my life. Although my heritage stems from what I saw in the movie, it is still shocking to see how other countries deal with the every day thing called ''Love''...Full of emotions and keeping you at constant attention. We all know we take love for granted and then there are people who are forbidden to feel what comes natural to us.

Great Aroma Coming from Laura Esquivel's Kitchen!!!

One good thing I saw that was good about the movie was that you could see the setting, in the book all you had was your imagination. One bad thing that I saw was that they added about three sceenes the movie that weren't in the book.

    Lifting Aeroma of Cooking

In this movie the actors showed the characters with great emotion. You actually think that you are watching live television when watching them. The movie left out some entire scenes though. On how certian characters had some experiences happen to them. And that took away from the fullness of the movie. This is a wonderful movie for people who like romance and families hard times and survival.
