Overview

A lonely little girl makes a very unusual friend -- a ukulele-playing alien who likes to toss around small automobiles -- in this antic animated comedy from Walt Disney Studios. Lilo (voice of Daveigh Chase) is a young Hawaiian girl being raised by her teenaged sister Nani (voice of Tia Carrere) after the unexpected death of their parents in an auto accident. While Nani tries to hold their household together, Lilo is a child with unusual interests and a distinctive sense of humor, which makes it hard for her to bond with her peers, as well as her big sister. Nani decides Lilo might be happier if she had a pet, so the sisters go to the animal shelter to adopt a dog; however, the critter which catches Lilo's fancy is a fuzzy blue creature she names Stitch (voice of Chris Sanders). Nani isn't so sure Stitch is really a dog, and it turns out she's right; Stitch is actually "Genetic Experiment 626," a mutation created by extraterrestrial mad scientist Dr. Jumba (voice of David Ogden Stiers) to be used a weapon. Stitch is an intelligent but gleefully destructive little creature with superhuman strength who has escaped to Earth and crash-landed in the Hawaiian islands, but Lilo sees him simply as a fellow misfit and attempts to teach him to behave like her favorite American icon, Elvis Presley. Meanwhile, Nani struggles to keep Lilo and Stitch on their best behavior as stern social worker Cobra Bubbles (voice of Ving Rhames) tries to determine if Nani is fit to raise a child, while Dr. Jumba and Pleakley (voice of Kevin McDonald) attempt to capture "Experiment 626" and bring him back home. Chris Sanders, who provides the voice of Stitch, also co-wrote and co-directed the film, which features numerous Elvis Presley tunes on the soundtrack, as well as a new recording of "Burning Love" by country star Wynonna.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Disney has never before unleashed an animated character like the helium-voiced Stitch, which makes Lilo & Stitch the most refreshingly out-of-this-world film from the House of Mouse in quite a while. Filled with anarchic humor and stuffed to the pelvis with Elvis Presley songs, it tells the heartwarming story of an extraterrestrial science experiment gone awry, leaving chaos and destruction in its wake. All this occurs in Hawaii, to boot, where Stitch proves to be the answer to one lonely girl's prayers. Lilo, a young girl, lives with her loving but overwhelmed older sister, Nani (voiced by Tia Carrere). Lonely Lilo is something of an outcast, with a passion for the King and a penchant for mischief. "Send me the nicest angel you have," she wishes upon a star. What she gets is Stitch, a.k.a. Experiment 626, who escapes his creators and crash-lands on our planet. His maker, Jumba (David Odgen Stiers), and a supposed Earth expert, Pleakley (Kevin McDonald of Kids in the Hall), are dispatched to retrieve him. But Lilo finds him first in a dog pound and adopts him. Her ill-fated attempts to tame the creature come at a time when a menacing social worker (Ving Rhames) gives Nani only three days to shape up the family's untidy life or lose custody of Lilo. What "Hakuna Matata" was to The Lion King, "ohana" is to Lilo & Stitch. It means "family," and to Nani and Lilo, that means "nobody gets left behind or forgotten." As much as it subverts the time-honored Disney formula, Lilo & Stitch is refreshingly old school. For the first time since Dumbo, the animators used watercolors for the backgrounds. One of the most enjoyable Disney animated features in recent years, it rivals Aladdin, Hercules, and the surprise hit The Emperor's New Groove for sheer fun. The DVD edition will have you all shook up with music videos of Elvis classics (performed by the A*Teens and Wynonna), deleted scenes, and those hilarious commercials in which Stitch wreaks havoc on such Disney icons as Ariel and Belle and the Beast.
All Movie Guide - Skyler Miller
One of Disney's most quirky and imaginative animated features, Lilo & Stitch plays like an antidote to the calculated, by-the-numbers feel that permeates even the best of the studio's latter-era films. Refreshingly free of demographically determined elements, Lilo & Stitch is lively entertainment that manages to integrate themes of family, loss, and redemption without being overly didactic or sentimental. The movie also generates frequent laughter without leaning too heavily on the self-aware jokiness and throwaway pop-culture references favored by so many of its contemporary animated features. Instead, humor emerges from the unique characters of Stitch, an anarchic and destructive (yet cuddly) space alien, and Lilo, a mischievous young girl who finds her match in Stitch. There's room for a few rousing action sequences as well as some quiet, heartbreakingly sweet moments that equal the finest Disney has put onscreen. Not least of all, the animation is infused with a naturalistic, unobtrusive beauty, thanks in large part to the watercolor backgrounds (Disney's first since the 1940s) and Chris Sanders' distinct art style, with its rounded edges and vibrant colors. The fact that the hand-drawn Lilo & Stitch is considered an anomaly in the CG-dominated '00s is a little troubling, but it's also a potent reminder that there is still a place for superb traditional animation in a post-Toy Story world.

I don't recall this movie being all that highly publicized (unlike Toy Story, which of course has star power behind it in terms of the voice-overs) but it's a touching and exciting story. Lilo is an outcast among other little girls, cared for by her sister since their parents died. Taking place in Hawaii, Lilo offers up a prayer one night for a friend. What she gets is a mad alien scientist's genetic experiment on the loose: a tiny but brilliant, remarkably strong, seemingly indestructible dog-like creature with a very short fuse (a personality trait Lilo and her sister also share in abundance). A gigantic social services worker who was surely a black ops soldier warns the girls they could be separated since the elder struggles to hold down a job and provide a stable home environment, but Stitch, despite his gift for mayhem, makes his oddball family heal and grow stronger. The mad scientist and a bumbling alien coalition government worker go to Earth to try to capture Stitch, a task which offers plenty of laughs as a secondary storyline. So, a little-known work of genius - I'd rank this as highly as Monsters, Inc.

I first saw ''Lilo and Stitch'' in the theater with my dad and we both really liked it.The main characters are a dysfuncsoinal,Hawaiian family consisting of insecure Nani, lonesome Lilo, and, the newest member, pet dog Stitch. What Lilo and Nani don't know is that Stitch is really a shape-shifting alien built to destroy. But Stitch eventually develops feelings and whats to be part of their ''ohana'' or family.I recommend this movie for people of all ages.

This movie is funny but also tells about a girls need to fit in. For a disney movie this movie is one of the best. Lilo in her life has been through a lot and the thing she turns to is the most unlikly thing ''Stitch''. This movie is a comedy not like any other.

I thought this movie was excellenct for KIDS, this movie was not made for adults in mind but all can enjoy it. So for those nay-sayers who feel that it was either offensive, or derrogoratory in some way is absurbded this is just another fun movie for children of all ages to enjoy. It is better than most movies that are coming out lately, and I thank Disney for a job well done.

I'd already seen the DVD (rental) and was happy to get it for Christmas. One thing odd, though -- the songs were switched. Originally, Stitch's claw plays 'Hound Dog,' but on mine it plays 'Suspicious Minds.' (I checked the trailer online.) What gives?

I thought that Lilo and Stitch was the best movie Disney has ever made. I thought that Jumba was funny too!

i have this movie on dvd, and i think it is an awesome movie, i especially liked the song Hawaiin roller coaster ride, and whenn Stich throws that book at the social worker and when Nani is talking to that guy on the phone and she says, ''I think it might be a koala, an evil koala, i can't even pet it; it keeps staring at me like it's gonna eat me.'' And then she drops the phone.... anyway. i love this movie

''Lilo & Stitch'' is an animated movie that boasts the kind of positive lessons about love and acceptance explored in Disney animated classics such as ¿The Jungle Book¿ and ¿Dumbo,¿ but constructed with 21st century sensibilities. The animation of action set in Hawaii and outer space is stylish and wonderfully dynamic under the care of directors Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders (III). The story pools all types of elements together flawlessly, with the main emphasis on an orphaned little girl named Lilo (voiced by Daveigh Chase) living in the lush setting of Hawaitt under the care of her older sister, Nani (voiced by Tia Carrere). But in answer to a wish Lilo makes upon a star to have an Angel sent to her, along comes an alien named Stitch. Believing Stitch (voiced by the previously-mentioned Sanders) is a dog when the two sisters visit a nearby animal shelter, their life is transformed when the genetically-altered extraterrestrial¿s world collides with the South Pacific in a series of fun and memorable adventures that lend themselves to both comic and heartwarming situations. And with much of the colorful action painted around timeless Elvis Presley songs, you won¿t be able to help falling in love with this animated nugget.

Saw this film during June 2002. It was so awesome and very funny. It was also touching, because it talks a lot about family (Ohana in Hawiai) and about finding your place. In the film, Stitch, an alien created to destroy crash lands on Earth, and is adopted by a little girl, Lilo. This is one of Disney's best films!

it is an excellent movie from disney! I AM MEXICAN, I LIVE IN MEXICO IN THIS MOMENT.I SPEAK IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH. SOMEONE WANTS TO TALK WITH ME ABOUT MOVIES?

I was skeptical about this movie being set in Hawaii; I was born and raised in Hawaii, and I get very cranky when I see the place, the language, and the people depicted as stereotypes. At least Disney had the brains to hire people to get the Local accent right, and the BIG LESSSON (the Hawaiian concept of ''ohana'') wasn't all that difficult to swallow. This a fun movie to watch. The best part is that, unlike other Disney movies, the characters don't burst into songs at inappropriate moments, the Good Guys aren't completely perfect, and the so-called Bad Guys aren't evil caricatures. The art and backgrounds are gorgeous, and they didn't take too many liberties with geography and setting. Heart-warming ending -- not too saccharine -- with a nice twist. One warning though... my four-year old daugther got very upset when Lilo was separated from her sister. IAC, this is one I *have* to own on DVD.

Lilo and Stitch is one of the best Disney movies! I originally did not think that the movie would be good but I gave it a chance. Now I am an avid fan of the Lilo and Stitch series as well. His cousins are cute too but Stitch is the best! Careful, make sure you have tissue for this movie.
