Steven Spielberg has talked for years about doing a film on Abraham Lincoln, but it turns out that when he finally got around to doing it, the finished movie feels less like his than it does the screenwriter's -- Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner. The movie stars Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th president, focusing on the last few months of Lincoln's life as he tries to manipulate Congress into passing the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which would allow people to vote regardless of race and officially end slavery. Simultaneously, he attempts to bring about a peaceful end to the Civil War. These two goals appear to be mutually exclusive, a point established in an early scene where Lincoln confers with his most trusted political advisor, Secretary of State William Seward David Strathairn. The film is so focused on the political process -- the horse-trading, deception, and arm-twisting Lincoln and Seward perform to achieve their goals -- that it feels not unlike an extended episode of The West Wing. However, instead of Aaron Sorkin's ping-pong, Mamet-inspired patter, we are treated to Tony Kushner's almost Shakespearean dialogue. The characters speak in a formal yet often flowery vernacular that's invested with both remarkable imagery and witty insults, and Spielberg has assembled a flawless cast who each bring out the music in Kushner's words. First among equals is, of course, two-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, an actor of uncommon skill who manages to evoke Lincoln in all his honor and glory without once making him appear like a wax figure. This is a living and breathing human being who yearns to do the right thing in every instance, but is ripped to shreds emotionally when he has to deal with his emotionally high-strung, grieving wife Sally Field. To rally people to his cause at different points during the film, Lincoln delivers a Christlike parable about some historical event or an anecdote from his own life, and Day-Lewis spins these yarns with such folksy authority that the audience in the theater is sucked into his rhetorical magic just as inevitably as the characters he's speaking to onscreen. We hang on his every word, just as we do a commanding performance in live theater. The whole ensemble is arguably one of the greatest casts ever assembled. Tommy Lee Jones gets some of the best lines as an irascible congressman who has fought his whole career to give slaves both freedom and full citizenship -- it's the kind of performance that gets people nominated for Supporting Actor awards. James Spader steals all of his scenes playing a libidinous, extroverted political middleman responsible, along with a pair of cronies played by Tim Blake Nelson and John Hawkes, for making the deals with politicians Lincoln can't be seen doing himself. Each time any of the actors open their mouths, you marvel at how right they are for the part, and how gloriously they put across Kushner's lines. In large part because the dialogue is both so good and so plentiful, Lincoln is closer to a play than a movie, and this doesn't always work to Spielberg's strengths as a director. With words this beautiful, very little is needed to augment them, so most attempts to underscore the dialogue with say a symbolic thunder clap or overdone strings feel like a mistake, though he never smothers the movie in melodrama. The single biggest flaw is that they don't stick the landing. There's a superb shot that the movie should end on, but the film goes on for another ten minutes giving us scenes that we thankfully don't expect, yet, at the same time, we don't really want. Spielberg and longtime cinematographer Janusz Kaminski light the performers in ways that accentuate their earnestness, underscoring the filmmaker's obvious reverence for the material without turning these legendary figures into simple symbols of good. All of the characters remain troubled, three-dimensional people, and that turns out to be the best element of the movie, because Kushner manages to invest us in these people and their desires. What could easily have become a dry civics lesson is in fact loaded with laughs, inspiring triumphs, a subtle but undeniable awe for one of the country's defining figures, and some of the richest language you can find at the movies. It's a superior achievement for Kushner, and makes for one of the best of Spielberg's "serious" movies.

    Highly recommended!! One of the best movies I have ever seen.

    This is an excellent historical movie. The dialogue, the scenery, the acting, the directing, all of it is SUPERB. I was totally engaged from the first scene until the end. It was so breathtaking to have the opportunity to "see" Lincoln's thoughts, his pain about the issues and then his resolution to do the right thing as mandated by our constitution. All of the cast were superb. I recommend this movie for all citizens who want a great view at a true statesman who is also a great family man.

    Magnificent movie with a great cast. Anyone interested in United States history must see it.

    This movie proves that politics over the years hasn't changed much. Daniel Day-Lewis WAS Lincoln. He is a superb actor and while there is a lot more talk than action, I was never bored. Sally Field did a great job as Mary Todd Lincoln, a long-suffering woman with so many losses in her life. Tommy Lee Jones was wonderful to watch, also. Of course, there are no surprises to any student of American history in this movie, but it is very well done.

    History at its best.

    Great film making, high caliber performances.

    There is a reason Daniel Day-Lewis is regarded as one of our best actors. He personifies our collective perception of Abraham Lincoln in a way that broadens our understanding of the man behind the history lessons and what it might be like to actually be in the same room with him. The supporting cast is no less gifted. It is so often that real life is more dramatic and spell-binding that anything a person can imagine. Watching Lincoln is just that, a slice of life that changed everything in a time when so many were resistant to change. Spielberg's signature ability to tell a story with grace and beauty in the face of ugly moments captivates, as usual. Read whatever books you like about Lincoln, but let this be the one film you view on the subject.

    A true classic

    Steven Spielberg has tossed aside his razzle-dazzle filmmaking tricks and has given us his most mature and heartfelt movie of his storied career. His LINCOLN is a classic and always will be a classic of American cinema.

    Daniel Day-Lewis does not portray Lincoln, but truly IS our 16th President. At no time do you not believe you are watching an actor, but are watching Abraham Lincoln in the flesh. No actor has ever deserved the Best Actor nod than this performer.

    But excellent performances are not limited to Daniel Day-Lewis. Everyone in the film, from Sally Field (terrific as Mrs. Lincoln), David Strathairn to the smaller parts and even the extras are ALL wonderful.

    LINCOLN is a feast for the eyes and ears (a GREAT literate script by Tony Kushner), showing that great films can still be made in this era of CGI nothingness and franchise films ad nauseam.

    If you enjoyed Team of Rivals by Doris Kerns Goodwin,then see this movie!

    If you enjoy reading history books & viewing historical movies then this one is for you. It is intelligently written by Tony Kushner, deftly directed by Steven Spielberg. Daniel Day-Lewis deserved the academy award for his role as Lincoln,I don't think anyone else could do it better, as well as Sally Field's embodiment of Mary Lincoln. The supporting cast of David Strathairn as the politically savvy & shrewd lawyer William Seward the cabinet Sec. of State, Bruce McGill as short-tempered but devoted Edwin Stanton the cabinet Sec. of War, Lee Pace as the bellicose & surly Fernando Wood US Rep. of New York were all excellent! Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens,the bilious & pugnacious US Rep. from Pennsylvania was outstanding. Jackie Earle Haley was a spot-on photographic resemblance of CSA's VP Alexander Stephens. I particularly delighted in the performance of James Spader as the gregarious, off-color W. N. Bilbo. I watched this movie four times just to savor the dialogue, appreciate the fine performances & the beautiful cinematography of Janusz Kaminski, but especially the superb even flow from scene to scene in telling this important event in our US history. It was worth the wait since I read about this movie several years ago. Thanks Steven Spielberg!

    A Must See Movie!

    An incredible epic of a movie about the life and times of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. Daniel Day-Lewis does an exceptional portrayal of Lincoln which won him the Academy Award for best actor. Watching the movie you will believe him to be Abe. Sally Field is exceptional in the role of Mrs. Lincoln. You will be transported back to the time of the Civil War and all the atrocities of war, slavery and finally the freeing of the slaves. It is a must see movie of the year!

    Excellent Movie

    I enjoyed watching this at the movies so I had to buy it. It was worth the money and I am sure I will get years of enjoyment out of it. I would highly recommend this movie especially for history buffs.
