Overview

Herman Melville's short novel Billy Budd is adapted for the screen in this 1962 film, which is distinguished by Robert Krasker's expressive black-and-white cinematography and Peter Ustinov's crisp direction. Terence Stamp is Billy Budd, a seaman forced to serve in the British Navy during the war between England and France in 1797. Billy looks upon all men as inherently good and, although his crew mates are initially skeptical about this sailor who appears too good to be true, he proves his mettle by his skills as a sailor and gains the respect of the crew -- all except for the ship's reviled master-at-arms John Claggert Robert Ryan, who attempts to poison Billy's reputation by accusing him of instigating a mutiny. When the ship's captain, Edward Vere Peter Ustinov questions Billy about the charges, Billy reacts by striking Claggert, who falls over and dies from a blow on the head. A court-martial is called and Vere has to determine whether Billy should be hanged or acquitted.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Greg Fagan
The latest superb compilation set from the Warner Bros. vaults -- which includes treasures from the MGM library as well -- packs six wonderful adaptations from classic literature, all ripe for rediscovery on DVD. The lead film in the set, Captain Horatio Hornblower (1951), features Gregory Peck in the title role C. S. Forester's novel, with Virginia Mayo as Lady Barbara Wellesley. Anthony Hope's swashbuckling adventure The Prisoner of Zenda arrives in two versions on a double-sided disc here, both employing essentially the same script. Ronald Colman plays the dual lead role in David O. Selznick's acclaimed 1937 version, while Stewart Granger grabs the sword for MGM's 1952 Technicolor take. Gene Kelly's energetic romp as D'Artagnan distinguishes MGM's The Three Musketeers (1958) from earlier, later, and most likely future versions of the Alexandre Dumas adventure novel. The great director Vincente Minnelli achieves some of his finest work in the 1949 version of Madame Bovary included here, a splendid filming of Gustave Flaubert's novel that adds a prologue and epilogue in which James Mason appears as Flaubert, defending his novel as a work of fiction. The most recent film in the set, Billy Budd (1962), finds Peter Ustinov both behind the camera as director and in front of the camera as Edward Fairfax Vere, the ship's captain ultimately forced to decide the sailor Billy Budd's fate in author Herman Melville's allegorical tale.
