Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Nary a sour note is heard in this delightful collection of four musical stories from the Nickelodeon series based on the beloved books by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrator Maurice Sendak. In the title story, patience and practice pay off for Little Bear's band when they are asked to perform at his grandparents' golden anniversary celebration. In "Little Bear Sings a Song," the only thing more fun than singing a favorite song is making one up with your friends. In "Diva Hen," Little Bear and friends may not appreciate Hen's opera singing, but they still encourage her to perform the music she loves. In "Clever Cricket," Little Bear, Emily, and her Granny make a cricket feel at home by singing along with his chirps. Quiet and leisurely paced, Little Bear is a heartwarming haven on the preschool landscape; and the general air of harmony among all the characters is really something to sing about

Great when I was a kid

My grandmother had these at her house when I was younger, and all of us grandchildren just LOVED watching them! Personally, I felt the lessons little bear taught were very valuable and all of the kids really thought these movies were funny. My grandmother also loved them because they weren't too loud (like some other children's shows) and because they kept us entertained. The things that little bear and his friends did were actually things that us kids did, like pretending to get married (even just to our brothers and sisters) not in a romantic way, but just in the spirit of childhood. Coming from a kid, these movies were very cute and worth buying.

lacks the charm of the original books

I had sorely disappointed with this video when I watched it with my daughter. We LOVE the Little Bear books! However, I was disgusted with how the characters in this video behaved. One of the segements is based on the book a Kiss for Little Bear, however in the movie Cat sings, "Here comes the bride all fat and wide." Also, the female skunk is startled and accidently sprays Little Bear, so that when he walks her down the aisle, everyone has to hold their nose from the smell. I also felt that there was too much emphasis on romance of a young child to understand. Emily and Little Bear pretend to get married in one episode, and Skunk goes around desperate to be kissed in another. I cannot recommend this DVD, read the books instead.
