Little Britain - The Complete First Series

Overview

By the time it cleaned up at the 2004 British Comedy Awards, beating out such formidable competition as The Office and Nighty Night, this sketch-comedy showcase had already been through several incarnations. Originally produced as an audio series for the BBC's Radio Four, Little Britain won fans across the U.K. for its subversive send-up of 21st century British archetypes: a laddish lothario with a thing for his mate's elderly gran; a bossy small-town gay boy desperate to hold onto his uniqueness; the world's ...

Overview

By the time it cleaned up at the 2004 British Comedy Awards, beating out such formidable competition as The Office and Nighty Night, this sketch-comedy showcase had already been through several incarnations. Originally produced as an audio series for the BBC's Radio Four, Little Britain won fans across the U.K. for its subversive send-up of 21st century British archetypes: a laddish lothario with a thing for his mate's elderly gran; a bossy small-town gay boy desperate to hold onto his uniqueness; the world's most unconvincing cross-dresser; and a sour, surly diet guru with a weight problem of her own. The brainchild of Matt Lucas and David Walliams, who portray many of their own creations, Little Britain progressed to a successful television incarnation on the new digital channel BBC3 in early 2003. With Tom Baker on board as the program's sardonic narrator and Buffy the Vampire Slayer vet Anthony Stewart Head portraying a put-upon prime minister, the show quickly earned a cult following. By the time a second series appeared in 2004, Little Britain had been promoted to the more mainstream BBC1. Multiple wins at the aforementioned British Comedy Awards established the program's status as a marquee attraction. But its geographically specific humor did not immediately attain international popularity the way previous Britcoms such as Absolutely Fabulous had.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
There's Emily Howard, a "not very good transvestite"; Andy, a man in a wheelchair who can, in fact, walk, and his caretaker, Lou based on versions of Lou Reed and Andy Warhol; Vicky Pollard, a fast-talking juvenile delinquent; and Daffyd, "the only gay" in his Welsh village. These characters and almost 50 more are brought to life by the phenomenally talented Matt Lucas and David Walliams in the BBC comedy series Little Britain. The series began as a radio show on BBC Radio Four in 2001, moved to TV two years later, and now ranks among England’s biggest hits. It debuted in the U.S. on BBC America in June 2004 and came out on DVD a year later. A mix of Monty Python, The Kids in the Hall, and The League of Gentlemen, Little Britain derives its humor mainly from its oddball characters, rather than strictly script-based comedy. Multiple "personalities" appear in every episode, and it's a testament to Lucas and Williams's talent that every single skit will leave you laughing. The prosthetics, wigs, makeup, and different accents the pair use to transform themselves are so good that it's hard to believe that only two actors are involved. And the Series 1 DVD offers tons of behind-the-scenes information and extras that reveal exactly how it's done, from commentary on every episode to audio interviews about the birth of the series and how it has become a sensation.
