Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
In its third season, Little House on the Prairie became a ratings force to be reckoned with. It ranked among the top 15 shows of the season, along with The Waltons, and like that series, it offered viewers safe haven from controversy (All in the Family), inanity (Charlie's Angels), and titillation (Three's Company). Prepare to have your spirits lifted and your tears jerked, as the Ingalls family relies on hard work, faith, and family ties to survive life's setbacks in an often-harsh frontier environment. In the emotional two-part Thanksgiving episode, "Journey in the Spring," Laura's (Melissa Gilbert) close-knit bond with her widowed grandfather is strained after her beloved horse is seriously injured and her grandfather fails to make good on his promise to save it. Little House was big on reforming wayward souls. In "The Collection," Johnny Cash guest-stars as an ex-convict who plans to fleece the people of Walnut Grove, until their kindness inspires a change of heart. Some characters, though, resist redemption. Spoiled, stuck-up Nellie (Alison Arngrim), whom audiences loved to hate, gets her comeuppance in "Bunny," in which she pretends to be paralyzed, and "The Music Box," in which she torments a new girl who stutters. The Halloween episode, "The Monster of Walnut Grove," and "Fred," about an obstinate goat, offer welcome comic relief. This six-disc set delivers more than nostalgia for this cherished series based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's books; With its popular performers, iconic characters, and heartfelt stories, Little House on the Prairie is the very essence of comfort television.
