Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Based on the beloved books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House on the Prairie was one of those unabashed, old-fashioned family series that apathetic critics often take for granted but that earn the undying love of viewers. After leaving the Ponderosa, Michael Landon, as Charles Ingalls, found a welcome home for ten seasons on the banks of Plum Creek in Walnut Grove with his steadfast wife, Caroline (Karen Grassle), and daughters Laura (Melissa Gilbert), Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson), and Carrie (Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush). Frontier life here is idyllic, but not without hardships. Each episode in this inaugural season extols the virtues of hard work, perseverance, community, and, above all, faith. In the premiere episode, "A Harvest of Friends," the residents of Walnut Grove pitch in to help an injured Charles fulfill an obligation and keep his new home. The second episode, "Country Girls," introduces the good-hearted general store owner Mr. Oleson (Richard Bull), his shrewish wife (Scottie MacGregor), and their stuck-up daughter, Nellie (Alison Arngrim, who was recently honored with a Young Artist Lifetime Achievement Award). Other benchmark episodes include: "Mr. Edwards' Homecoming," in which Victor French, reprising his role from the Little House premiere movie (also available on DVD), joins the cast as frontiersman Isaiah Edwards; the powerful two-part episode, "The Lord Is My Shepherd," in which a guilt-stricken Laura runs away from home following the death of the infant brother she initially resented; and the heartwarming "Christmas at Plum Creek," which echoes O. Henry's story "The Gift of the Magi." Parents disheartened by the often crass programming that TV offers as family entertainment these days will welcome the return to Walnut Creek. For nostalgic viewers who grew up with the Ingallses and wish to introduce them to a new generation, this six-disc set will offer many quality family hours to come.

I Am a Die-Hard Little House on the Prairie Fan

I am retired now and STILL enjoy the Little House series. I never get tired of them and watch them over and over again. One thing I especially like is Michael Landon. I could cry when he cried and laugh when he laughed. He did so much to make those movies great. I loved everyone in the cast. I never go to the movies because I feel the quality is so much less than desired. Little House delivers a family-oriented movie that can be seen by anyone in the family with no fear of seeing anything bad. Thanks to Michael Landon for these wonderful movies. They lost a good guy too soon when he died!!

    Over and Over Again

I grew up watching Little House on the Prairie. I just found it on the television. I could watch it over and over. I could never get tired of watching the Little House Series. I loved it. When I was a child, I looked forward the summer months becauses that is when they would start showing Little House. I had put my hair in the braids like Laura Ingalls had and pretended to run down the hill except I would run down the stairs when the introduction of Little House music came on. One day I had missed a step and fell down the stair. I had to watch the rest of the Little House episodes sitting down with my foot up because I had sprained my ankle mimicking Laura. I still loved to watch Little House on the Prairie. Nothing stopped me from watching Little House on the Prairie.

    THE BEST SHOW EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, I got hooked to Laura Ingalls when my best friend announced (since we're both bookworms and we love books about prarie life) that I had to read the Little House sereies. Later that night when I showed my mom and dad the book, my mom said that those books had been a telivision series back when she was a girl, starring Melissa Gilbert, who later that month appeared on one of my not-as-great-as-Little-House shows but is still good, 7th Heaven. Next month there was a Michael Landon marathon on TV Land, with one of the shows being Little House. Little House debuted on TV Land the Monday after that, on every night at 8:00 PM. My mom, dad, and I watch the show every night now, and we got seasons 1,2,3, and 7. THIS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER!!!!! And for people who have seen seasons 6 and up, ALMANZO ROX!!!!!!!

    Little House at its Best.....

For those of us who grew up watching Little House, season one will definately bring back fond memories. I am impressed with the quality of the discs, which is much higher than the quality of reruns on television.

    Wonderful family series

My family of five started watching this together on Tuesday nights (just as I did when I was six). This series has sparked so many wonderful conversations and has shown my family that the values we hold fast to, have been around for many years. When I was young, I idolized Laura. As a mother, I now relate to Caroline and I am viewing the shows in a different light. If you are looking for good, wholesome entertainment, this is the DVD set for you!

    mother of two

i do not own this particular collection, however, i do own 'many, many episodes'.I have seen every episode available. i am an addict when it comes to this program. it is my 'soap opera'. my 2 boys, ages 6&8 love 'little house'. this is a highly recommended program for all ages. we laugh, we learn moral family values and it never fails, at the end of each episode, we cry. laura ingalls wilders' work has opened the eyes of so many people, from just a few notes growing up and has made many families sit back and take a look at the world changing around them. we should all take each episode as a lesson learned. from family values to struggles that only make you stronger, faith, love and friendship. example: 'he is only twelve', i am not much of a believer or religious person, however my heart hurt after watching this particular episode. if every person in the world would take a lesson from this one author, the world would be a much more peaceful place.
