Little House on the Prairie's ninth season opens with a two-part episode, "Times Are Changing," which finds Laura Ingalls (Melissa Gilbert) comforting her father, Charles (Michael Landon). Hard times are forcing the family to leave Walnut Grove behind for the big city; and as Charles takes one last look at the frontier home he built, she tells him, "You don't have to hide your tears from me, Pa." Of course, tears -- of joy, laughter, and heartbreak -- are an integral part of the Little House landscape, and in this last full season of the beloved family series, viewers are advised to keep a full supply of tissues handy. Season 9 bears the apt subtitle A New Beginning: With the Ingallses gone, the stories now focus on their extended family and friends, including Laura and husband Almanzo, the Olesons, Isaiah Edwards (Victor French), and the Carters. Landon, the series' heart and soul, toiled as screenwriter and director throughout the season. He does make a memorable return in the two-parter "Home Again," in which he accompanies adopted son Albert back to Walnut Grove to help Albert kick a morphine addiction. Alison Arngrim (as Nellie Oleson Dalton) is another welcome sight in "The Return of Nellie," in which the former girl-you-love-to-hate meets her match in the Olesons' newly adopted daughter, Nancy. ("I wasn't that bad, was I?" Nellie asks) Among this season's most powerful episodes are "A Child with No Name," in which Laura blames Doc Baker after her newborn dies; "The Wild Boy," a two-parter in which Isaiah takes in an escapee from a traveling sideshow; and "The Last Summer," starring Vera Miles as an elderly woman befriended by young Jason Carter. In the long-time-coming episode "May I Have This Dance," Willie Oleson (Jonathan Gilbert) finally stands up to his mother, who disapproves of his fiancée (Sherri Stoner, who would later become Disney's body model for Ariel in The Little Mermaid). Little House remains a bedrock of steadfast faith and positive values that lift it beyond mere "comfort television" status.
