Her mother Mari, however, is an outspoken woman who is convinced her sex appeal which is little will land her a man, especially when she's drunk. One night while bar-hopping, Mari meets the suave yet sleazy talent agent Ray Say Michael Caine, whom she takes home for a nightcap. There Ray hears the beautiful Little Voice singing a perfect rendition of Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz. He's stunned by its beauty and thinks he can make her a star. From there the story heads in complicated, romantic, and sweet-hearted directions that should not be given away. Also starring in this small independent film is Ewan McGregor.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Laura Abraham
Little Voice may not have a highly original screenplay, but the stellar, unpredictable performances of Jane Horrocks and Brenda Blethyn catapult this film right into the realm of superior movie viewing. Horrocks is better known for her role as Bubble on Absolutely Fabulous, and her bumbling, erratic persona on that series is little preparation for her moving and triumphant work as the shy, introverted title character. Brenda Blethyn's performance is full of fire and earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her efforts. Little Voice is a rich, rewarding work that could have easily veered off into many unsatisfying directions; luckily, director Mark Herman kept it on track. Herman directed this film directly on the heels of Brassing Off, another British film about musicians.

For any woman in search of her own voice...

Little Voice will satisfy and inspire anyone, especially a young woman, who has ever felt suffocated and 'talked over' by a controlling and narcissistic mother. Good to the last drop, which is the best of all.

One of my top 10 favorites!

This movie is one of my top 10 favorites! The singing is superb, the story is sweet. You'll especially love the movie if you are a fan of fabulous female singers of the 60's or ''lounge'' music.

    Delish!

I loved this movie until I saw in the final credits that Jane Horrocks did her own singing. That turned up my enthusiasm quite a lot actually. In one sense, this is the kind of film the Brits do so well, building affection for nutty misfits played by actors you've never heard of. Here we have the misfits, but played by wonderful gigantic stars, and the effect is marvelous. (Perhaps Jane Horrocks and Jim Broadbent aren't gigantic now, but they ought to be.) A thoroughly wonderful thing!
