Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
This collection of four episodes from the phenomenally popular Disney Channel series casts an offbeat comic eye on four universal coming-of-age milestones. In "Misadventures in Babysitting," the appealingly down-to-earth Lizzie (tween queen Hilary Duff) wants to prove to her parents that she is responsible enough to babysit her bratty younger brother. In "Between a Rock and a Bra Place," Lizzie and her best friend, Miranda, decide it’s time to shop for their first bras. In "Rated Aargh" and "Party Over Here," Lizzie’s ill-conceived plans to sneak into an R-rated movie and attend a non-chaperoned party have "grounded" written all over them. Lizzie McGuire boasts clever writing and a mix of visual styles (including an animated alter ego for the hapless Lizzie) that put a fresh spin on familiar sitcom situations. One nifty in-joke is the guest-star appearance of David Carradine (brother of series costar Robert Carradine, who portrays Lizzie’s father), who makes a cameo in the second episode. David, in his signature Kung Fu persona, is summoned to help Lizzie’s brother train for a Jet Li sidekick contest. When his son asks who that mysterious man was, his father replies, "I’ve known him all my life. He’s like a brother to me."
