In it Olivier portrays James Tyrone, an aging actor who has abandoned all of being a great performer and has settled for a being a hack. His bitter wife, Mary, has slipped into morphine addiction, while his eldest son, Jamie, is a drunk, envious of the writing talent of his younger brother, Edmund. These four huanted lives clash in what O'neill called his story of "old sorrow, written in tears and blood."
