Lorna Doone

( 11 )

Overview

Much of the success of Lorna Doone stems from its melodic score, and the 2.0-channel Dolby Surround audio transfer on this disc nicely conveys the romantic tone of the story. It also displays power during the gun battles, where the piercing shots jump from the speakers. There are obvious limits to this track, but they aren't too noticeable while watching the film. The dialogue is easily understood, and it combines with the score to create a pleasant viewing experience. The full-screen transfer is a surprising ...

The dialogue is easily understood, and it combines with the score to create a pleasant viewing experience. The full-screen transfer is a surprising success considering that it originated from a television film. The majestic landscapes look wonderful and the natural colors shine from the screen. While John Ridd crosses the impressive waterfalls and rocks to reach Lorna, the nice picture adds to the mood of the story. During the battle scenes (with fire and steel), the color levels are solid and clear. This transfer fails to match up with the best anamorphic widescreen transfers, but it does plenty with the limited technical faculties. This disc contains no special features of any kind, but it does feature impressive and colorful menus with scenes from the film running over music. English captions are also included and are accessible through the television.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Chas Turner
Set in the 17th century against the turbulent backdrop of England's lawless West Country, Lorna Doone is an action-packed tale of romance, revenge, and clan warfare based on R.D. Blackmore's sweeping novel of love and crime. One of fiction's most respected works, now turned into a fantastic A&E/BBC co-production, the story follows three young people caught in an emotional triangle -- Carver Doone Queer as Folk's Aidan Gillen, the murderous member of a family of aristocratic outlaws; John Ridd Topsy-Turvy's Richard Coyle, a young farmer dedicated to avenging his father's death; and Lorna Doone Amelia Warner of Quills, the dark-eyed beauty for whom both men would willingly die. At once independent and vulnerable, Lorna is the Doone "princess," condemned by the family to marry Carver. But Lorna may not be quite what she seems. Director Mike Barker Best Laid Plans adds a light but memorable touch to the lavish costume drama.
All Movie Guide - Mike Cummings
Wild and woolly southwest England of the late 1600s is the setting for this tale of action, revenge, and star-crossed love. Based on R.D. Blackmore's popular 1869 novel, the film stars 18-year-old Amelia Warner as Lorna Doone. Beautiful and compassionate, she is the only good Doone in a family of bad Doones who ride out from their swamp fortress to pillage and terrorize the Exmoor countryside. Cousin Carver Doone (Aiden Gillen), the nastiest Doone of all and the heir-apparent of the Doone dynasty, covets her and means to marry her. But when Lorna falls in love with outsider John Ridd (Richard Coyle), a farmer whose father Carver had murdered, the Ridds and the Doones get down to some serious feuding à la Romeo and Juliet and the Hatfields and McCoys. Though the cardboard characters come in two shades -- black and white, with no hints of ambiguous gray -- the acting and the script aptly distill the spirit of the 600-page book, and the cinematography captures the unspoiled coombs and copses of Devonshire, where author Blackmore grew up and well knew the ways of the people and their land. In addition, the action sequences -- featuring charging horsemen, smoking muskets, and hand-to-hand combat -- are well staged. Although the outcome of the story is predictable, a well kept secret about Lorna's past is not. Because there is no heavy-duty gore or profanity in the film -- and no display of wayward sexuality, only chaste kisses and pledges of undying love -- families and teachers will find it suitable for children. Lorna Doone, a co-production of the BBC and the A&E Network, is a worthwhile film that helps prove classic literature remains one of filmdom's best wellheads of good entertainment.

    a slow but determined typist

Lorna Doone is a yet another BBC "great", I have seen nothing else like it. It is one of the best stories I have ever come across. This is one of the few instances(any of whitch I had deemed impossible)that I liked the movie better than the book.My favorite character I must say is Carver.During the movie I am desparate for Lorna to escape from him, but drat him he is so handsome! He is so easy to hate that you almost enjoy it.Just when you think THE MOVIE has fallen into the category of a predictable boring romance the plot twist or a battle begins. This movie is for those true romantics at heart that don't let it show.

    Worth the money, a keeper..

Several actors you will recognize, a special surprise. Movie is well made and all the actors do a wonderful job. The very beginning is questionable, but ends up being highly enjoyable. Couple of great twists that keep you interested and best of all, a happy ending.
