Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Greta Scacchi can do the "rhymes-with-witch" character better than most actresses (see her chilling performance in The Browning Version), and here, with Daniel Craig coming in somewhere between Robert Mitchum and Liam Neeson, she finds a charming roué with whom to make some bitchy friction. She's not an easy character to like -- the naïve housekeeper is far more sympathetic -- but it's refreshing to find a female character so conflicted. Director Cathal Black does wonders on a budget -- the period settings, costumes, and details are as convincing as the acting -- but the film is dampened by the somewhat comical ending. Apparently the story is based on actual characters and incidents, so if the climax is disturbingly undisturbing, blame it on real life.

    Honest and moving

I found it intriguing, dark, honest and moving. Had all the hallmarks of a movie that was trying to BE a movie. And not a recipe..
