Despite financial travails the pampered Oliver actually has to go to work!, the couple is blissfully happy....until Jenny is diagnosed as having an unnamed disease that consigns her to an early death. The movie's tagline "Love means never having to say you're sorry" became an iconic American catchphrase, the film's theme a number one hit. One of the early products of Paramount guru Robert Evans, Love Story grossed more money than any Paramount production before it. This enormously successful film inspired a 1978 sequel, Oliver's Story.

Upon being released theatrically in 1970, Love Story struck many as being anachronistic: a schmaltzy tearjerker that ignored Vietnam-era realities and recalled simplistic dramas produced by a less socially conscious Hollywood during the "good old days." Perhaps that's what appealed to moviegoers, who flocked in droves to this unabashed weepie. Three decades later, it's still one of the screen's best-remembered romances. Ryan O'Neal stars as the athletically inclined scion of a wealthy family, attending the college from which his father graduated. He's handsome, popular, and a bit arrogant -- but that changes when he falls for Ali MacGraw, a serious-minded scholarship student from a working-class background. The relationship blossoms into profound love, a love that's tested when she's diagnosed with a terminal illness. Director Arthur Hiller The Hospital adapts Erich Segal's bestselling book which evolved from his screenplay in a straightforward fashion, allowing this modern-day fairy tale to run its course without directorial embellishment. As basic and unpretentious as its title suggests, Love Story is what the old movie moguls used to call "a three-hankie job" -- but it still rates among the very best of that type. Hiller revisits the film's production in his detailed audio commentary for the DVD, which also includes a retrospective featurette, "Love Story: A Classic Remembered."

Some viewers dismiss Love Story as a cynical, manipulative tearjerker, mentioning "MacGraw's Disease," an incurable ailment which leaves its victims brave, sunny, and radiant. But these easy criticisms ignore why the film works so beautifully in the first place: it presents a pair of interesting, fully realized characters and makes us fall in love along with them. Ali MacGraw's portrayal of Jenny Cavilleri is so exuberant yet believable (she talks like a sailor) that she is immensely appealing, and Ryan O'Neal's Oliver is both sympathetic and admirable. These are good people, and when Jenny gets sick and Oliver grieves, we suffer along with them. Unlike with most tearjerkers and disease-of-the-week movies, we cry not because someone died, but because Jenny died. For proof of how much she's missed, see the dreadful sequel, Oliver's Story.

    Wow, is this bad!

    I purchased this for my teenager because I remembered it as "THE" teen movie of it's day. Well, it was almost unwatchable. The plot was lazy and the acting was atrocious! No wonder Ali McGraw faded away. Don't let your memories fool you, this one should stay in the vault!

    This movie will always be my favorite movie. There is nothing like it! It truely captures the idea of unconditional & true love!

    Not too young to enjoy a classic

    i loved this movie true it was made before my time but i just loved how the two people from two different back grounds find love.

    If you haven't ever been in love yet, this movie will certainly cause you to at least fall in love with Love!

    A great classic indeed

    It's a beautifully simple film, and its simplicity is what makes it so powerful. It's purely about love, and love overcoming everything - even snobbish parents and death. Today, more than 30 years later, its premise has become so cliche, but Love Story was one of the first of its kind, and easily the best. O'Neal and MacGraw are incredibly attractive and have great chemistry, and their devastation becomes yours as well. The film really packs an emotional punch. I love it.

    MOVING

    I have fallen in love with love story!This movie changes your perspective on what love is,what its all about,and the sacrifcies people make for one another.It will make you laugh,cry,and dream.Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal have an excellent chemistry and portray two lovers very well in this all time classic.My all time favorite movie ever,even though it was made before i was born.I give it 5 stars,a MUST see!
