Overview

There's little arguing that Luis Bunuel was one of the most gifted and provocative talents to emerge from the European cinema in the 20th Century, and his catalog of films certainly deserves to be better represented on DVD, so for many fans the arrival of a two-disc set featuring a pair of rare Bunuel titles would be great news. However, Lion's Gate's Luis Bunuel Collector's Edition is less exciting than one might hope, as it features two of the master's least interesting efforts -- 1947's Gran Casino, Bunuel's first Mexican film and his only musical, and 1960's The Young One (aka La Joven), one of only two movies he made in English. Gran Casino is a formulaic melodrama that never seems to find its footing, and The Young One is one of Bunuel's few flat-out misfires, a meditation on lust and racism that wildly misses its target. However, curious cineastes who pick up this package will at least be satisfied with the quality. Both Gran Casino and The Young One have been presented in their original aspect ratios -- Gran Casino in the full frame ratio of 1.33:1, and The Young One in the widescreen ratio of 1.78:1, letterboxed on conventional televisions and enhanced for anamorphic play on 16x9 monitors. Both films look quite good as well, transferred from clean source elements with good contrast and a solid range of grey tones in the black and white images. The audio for both films has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, retaining the original monophonic mixes, and sounds as good as the period recording techniques permit. Gran Casino is in Spanish with optional English titles, while The Young One is in English, and includes optional subtitles in English and Spanish. As a bonus, The Young One features an optional audio commentary from Peter Evans and Isabel Santaolalla that focuses on the film's technique and themes, while Philip Kemp offers a commentary on Gran Casino which presents background on the cast and creative team and how Bunuel came to make films in Mexico. (Curiously, on the copy of this set we previewed, the two discs were mis-marked -- the disc labeled Gran Casino actually included The Young One, and vice versa.) This set may celebrate two marginal titles from Luis Bunuel's body of work, but it does so with genuine respect, and while this is a bad place to start investigating his films, those who already know his work will be pleased with the quality of the set.
