Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
The Swamp gets a dose of unwanted culture with the introduction of Boston blueblood Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III (David Ogden Stiers) for M*A*S*H's sixth season. Original Swamp foil Larry Linville (Maj. Frank Burns) feared getting typecast as the shallow bad guy and left the series at the end of Season 5. Although his character isn't seen, the sixth-season opener has Burns getting arrested and then transferred back to the States, causing Winchester to become an unwilling permanent replacement. Alan Alda (Hawkeye Pierce) also expands his repertoire this season by writing five episodes, all of which are outstanding, especially the season's second outing, "Fallen Idol." When Radar (Gary Burghoff) is wounded during a trip to Seoul he took at Hawkeye's urging, Pierce drowns his guilt in booze and destroys Radar's idealized view of him. Dr. Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) returns to the 4077th after being injured in the emotional Alda-penned episode "War of Nerves." And Alda flexes both his writing and directing chops in the heart-wrenching "In Love and War," which has Hawkeye falling for a Korean woman, only to be torn from her by the realities of war. Other cast members also shine this season, including Loretta Swit (Maj. Margaret Houlihan) in the Emmy-nominated two-parter "Comrades in Arms," wherein Margaret shows her tender side after getting a letter meant for another woman from her husband. "Tea and Empathy" finds Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) facing a test of faith when he hears the confession of man who has stolen needed medical supplies. Stiers’ first front-and-center episode is "The Smell of Music," wherein Winchester's obnoxious French horn playing leads to a battle of wills with B.J. (Mike Farrell) and Hawkeye. Even into its sixth season the comedic juggernaut of M*A*S*H was still going strong, and the 24 episodes in this set are still as laugh-out-loud funny as they were in 1977 and 1978.

A wonderful and valued collection for any MASH fan! However, I started my collection in VHS format and need VHS to complete it. Please consider a re-release. (I am sure there are many more in my position)

I am a MASH addict. However i was very disappointed that Season 6 hasn't come out in VHS. I have 1 through 5 in VHS format and want a complete set eventually. Hopefully it will be released in VHS very soon!!!

As usual, all the shows and actors are hilarious. I only wish this set had come out in VHS form like the first five seasons. How can a person get a complete set if it changes formats part way through?

I was only 7 yrs. old when MASH started and didn't really become interested in the show until the 4th or 5th season. It has since been my favorite TV series. Keep the DVD's coming.

The addition of Major Charles Emerson Winchester III gives Hawkeye & B.J. a worthy opponent. Margaret finally gets to grow into an unforgetable and more realistic, lovable charactor. The series was at its best from season six to the final movie. Love that Winchester!
