Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Although the initial gimmick in MacGyver was the title character's facility for turning ordinary, everyday objects into weapons or tools, by Season 3 the series depended largely on the popularity and charisma of its star, Richard Dean Anderson. As a result, more episodes were built around his personality, and a regular female character was introduced for romantic interest. In most of her Season 3 appearances, Elyssa Davalos portrays Nikki Carpenter, but she first turns up in the year-opening two-parter, "Lost Love," as one of MacGyver's old flames, Soviet dissident Lisa Kohler. He runs into her after being hired to guard a valuable Chinese artifact; when Lisa is captured by Russian agents, Mac is forced to steal the artifact and turn it over to the enemy operatives. "GX-1" finds MacGyver once again pitted against the Soviets, this time racing against time to locate a downed high-tech spy plane before they can get to it. Mac's old pal Jack Dalton (Bruce McGill) figures prominently in "The Odd Triple," flying Mac and an heiress to France with jewels that turn out to be stolen. Our pick for the year's best episode is "The Widowmaker," featuring Michael Des Barres as recurring villain Murdoc, a cold-hearted assassin who kills one of MacGyver's best friends in an attempt to draw Mac out. MacGyver decides to conceal himself in a cabin owned by his boss, Pete Thornton (Dana Elcar); and, when Nikki goes to visit, Murdoc decides to strike at both of them. Although MacGyver retains a generally lighthearted tone, this season's episodes are, on the whole, more suspenseful than previous ones -- which, in our view, makes them additionally appealing.

We bought the whole set and enjoyed them all. This is a series that was consistantly good and worthwhile. Although the technical applications aren't always feasable, the story made it forgivable...the good guy always wins and the message is winning with brain and not violence. (MacGuyver doesn't like guns) Great for the whole family! I highly reccommend this series for everyone.
