Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
During its eight-year run on NBC, Mad About You found a niche portraying the humorous elements of married life in New York City. As Paul and Jamie Buchman, Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt endeared themselves as everyday people, finding laughter amid daily inconveniences and family squabbles. After the departure of Seinfeld, Mad About You became one of the Peacock's de facto programming jewels, and the network paid handsomely for it. Helen Hunt came into her own as an actress during the later part of the series, and she earned four consecutive Best Actress Emmys for her work. This two-disc set features all 22 first-season episodes, including the pilot, and is sure to delight those fans who've been painstakingly sifting through syndication trying to get their Mad About You fix.
  • "Romantic Improvisations" -- Paul Paul Reiser and Jamie Buchman Helen Hunt are newlyweds adjusting to Manhattan life. In the debut episode, their scheduled evening alone goes terribly awry.
  • "Sofa's Choice" -- Jamie and Paul's first major purchase becomes a disaster when Paul manages to hyperventilate at a Manhattan department store.
  • "Sunday Times" -- Paul and Jamie enjoy a quiet Sunday with nothing to do except decide what to do. It isn't long, however, before their friends intrude.
  • "Out of the Past" -- Paul's ex-girlfriend visits New York, leading to a combination of excitement, guilt, and, ultimately, stupidity.
  • "Paul in the Family" -- An unexpectedly long visit by Jamie's parents quickly turns her into a raving lunatic.
  • "I'm Just So Happy for You" -- Paul's film about Yankee Stadium is rejected by PBS on the same day Jamie lands a big account, souring her celebratory bash.
  • "Token Friend" -- Paul is suddenly reluctant to ride the subway because a former classmate from film school turns up as the clerk at his station.
  • "The Apartment" -- Planning a will brings up the subject of Paul's old bachelor pad, which he sublets; Jamie would rather he let go of the past.
  • "Riding Backwards" -- On a Thanksgiving trip with Jamie's parents, Paul and Jamie are doing fine, Mark Richard Kind and Fran Leila Kenzle begin to fight, while Selby Tommy Hinkley and Lisa Anne Ramsay are just friends. The return journey, however, is a different story.
  • "Neighbors from Hell" -- The Buchmans get off on the wrong foot with their neighbors, and each attempt to improve relations only makes matters worse.
  • "Met Someone" -- The story of how Jamie and Paul met is revealed, beginning with a chance encounter and then some hard work by Paul to locate Jamie and ask her out.
  • "Maid About You" -- The Buchmans find their new once-a-week maid a big help, but she's heartbroken that her affection for "Mr. Paul" is unrequited.
  • "Togetherness" -- Producer Jamie hires Paul as the director for the New York City tourism campaign, but she soon finds out how much togetherness is too much.
  • "Weekend Getaway" -- An escape to the countryside soon has Jamie wanting to stay permanently, make apples, till the soil, and run a Chinese restaurant.
  • "The Wedding Affair" -- After unwittingly revealing a secret about a bride-to-be, Paul badgers Jamie into telling him one of hers, and soon regrets it.
  • "Love Among the Tiles" -- What should a couple do when trapped in their bathroom on Valentine's Day? Paul and Jamie show the way, with amusing results.
  • "The Billionaire" -- An energetic, eccentric billionaire wants Paul to make a film about him. Meanwhile Paul's new editor/cameraman is anything but energetic.
  • "The Man Who Said Hello" -- Paul's father has 15 minutes of fame after an incident with Regis Philbin, but Paul is soon viewed as an overbearing son by the entire city.
  • "Swept Away" -- Jamie thinks that Lisa and her new boyfriend are moving too fast in their relationship, especially when they decide to move in together after a week.
  • "The Spy Who Loved Me" -- Jamie's new client is an old TV star idolized by Paul and Ira in their childhood, and they soon revert to the old ways and compete for his attention.
  • "The Painter" -- Jamie hires an ex-boyfriend to paint the apartment and becomes annoyed when Paul isn't concerned by the prospect of her old flame being alone with her.
  • "Happy Anniversary" -- At the Buchmans' first anniversary party, love blossoms between Warren Steven Wright and Connie Meagen Fay while Paul tries to turn back the clock, but there's no love lost between the now-separated Fran and Mark.

    A Great Series

What is really nice about this series is the gentle humor which manages to avoid going just plain stupid. Great actors & great scripts are key. Virtually every episode here is very good (although it would have helped to put them on the disk in the right order!). Extra features are non-existent, which should be an indictable offence these days - after all, it's pure jam for the studios.

    Love this DVD

I made it a point to purchase this DVD right off the bat when I discovered that it was going to be released. I watch it day in and day out. I am awaiting impatiently for the second season. Only this time however, I hope they will add a bit more special features (Behind the Scenes, Interviews, Commentarys, Outtakes) as the others had mentioned. On the first season dvd--no special features were added. Only the episodes and the last two episodes were in the wrong order. (e.g. ''The Painter'' and ''Happy Anniversary''). My Favorite Episodes are: The Pilot, Out of the Past, Sofa's Choice, Maid About You, The Apartment, Neighbors from Hell, Met Someone, Love Among the Tiles, and Weekend Getaway

Great episodes, but extras? Not so much.

This is a great DVD from a great show. I do wish that they had a bit more, extras, interviews, something. Maybe outakes or a commentary on the second season DVD, coming out soon I hope. It was a great show, but I feel the DVD should offer a bit more, especially for the price.

    Fun, but lacking additional materials

I wish this DVD had more than just the episodes. I am interested in interviews with the cast and crew, behind the scenes information, the ''making of'' type material, etc. Even so, I LOVE this DVD and hope they do all of the seasons.
