While Alex and his pals Marty the Zebra voice of Chris Rock, Gloria the Hippo voice of Jada Pinkett Smith, and Melman the Giraffe voice of David Schwimmer are happy with their lot in life, they occasionally have a certain curiosity about the outside world, and when the zoo's penguins decide to make a break for it, Marty follows them into the city. Alex, Gloria, and Melman set out to find Marty before he gets into trouble, but they're a bit too late, and soon the zookeepers have decided that the animals are restless and need to be returned to the wild. Soon the critters find themselves living on the coast of Madagascar, where they quickly discover they aren't quite suited for living in the wild. It's all happening at the Central Park Zoo in New York City, especially for Alex the pampered lion (Ben Stiller), Melman the hypochondriac giraffe (David Schwimmer), and Gloria the maternal hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith). But Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), experiencing a midlife crisis on his tenth birthday, wants to follow his wanderlust to…Connecticut(!), where -- he has been erroneously informed -- the wild things roam free. He bolts for the train station, and his three friends escape from the zoo to retrieve him -- a gambit that is misinterpreted as a cry to return to their natural habitat. But a funny thing happens on their way to a Kenyan preserve. Thanks to a quartet of escape-happy penguins, they are rerouted to the eponymous island, where carnivore Alex discovers the circle of life does not include being brought steaks every night by human handlers. Will he revert to his basic instincts? Madagascar boasts a menagerie of scene-stealing supporting characters, including Sacha Baron Cohen (Da Ali G Show) as a goofy lemur king and Cedric the Entertainer as his second in command. But waddling away with the movie are Mort (Andy Richter), Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico as the penguin commandos who talk like the Dead End Kids. So auspicious was their screen debut that they were immediately signed for their own short subject, The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper, which premiered theatrically with Wallace and Grommit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit and is happily included on this DVD. Madagascar follows the Shrek template: A-list voice cast; irreverent humor; too-hip-for-the-playroom references (HMOs, author Tom Wolfe) for the adults; and a rockin' soundtrack for the kids. The poop jokes? Come on, they’re for everybody. Alex's dilemma adds some bite to this culture-shock comedy (and may frighten little ones). If kids loved Madagascar in theaters, they will go wild for this DVD, which comes packed with interactive games, activities, and projects. The penguins even contribute audio commentary!

    Clever, unformula

    Ben Stiller and Chris Rock, wow, loved the casting and concept of Madagascar. Brilliantly executed and very fun for our whole family. The zoo animals pop right off the screen and that New York is mixed in, well, doesn't get much better. Perfect for a grey rainy day.

    great movie

    my daughter loves dancing to this movie. she's in kindergarten & they are learning spanish so she likes watching the movie in english first then in spanish. then at the end she likes to dance to the video.

    Good for what ails ya!

    Remember when you were a kid and watched cartoons? Well, you can be a kid again and forget about all the grown-up stuff going on around you for a few hours. It's a good way to keep your sanity and the characters are fun.

    A Fantastic Family Movie!

    We LOVE this movie!! Our 2 year old son watches it everyday, and my husband and I do not have a problem with that. We eagerly watch and laugh every time:-) It is absolutely hilarious. Every character is equally funny. We are actually disappointed there isn't a sequel. We would like to find the song, "I like to move it move it" since our son can't get enough of it!!

    A movie that will entertain kids AND adults!!

    I loved this movie!!! Humor for both kids and adults (although I didn't pick up on some of the adult humor until after a few times of watching it). The beginning is a little slow, but there are plenty of entertaining story lines to keep you laughing. The penguins are hilarious! Definitely recommended!!!

    Not for a kid

    Pros: Nice concept Cons: The story falls short of concept and lost potential to become a success. It lost it's edge on choosing the role and find a right ending and present it self to the right audience. The Bottom Line: A nice timepass movie, for kids to watch it with adults. We did enjoy it but will not watch it again, I suppose.

    Okay, but not the best I've seen

    This movie is okay. Though the animation was EXTREMELY well done, the plot line was very weak and the lemurs got on my nerves. The song "Move It" is cool, but gets annoying after you hear it several times. I recently saw "Cars" in the theaters, and Madagascar just can't be compared with that. However, they did a good job picking the right cast for the voices (Chris Rock as Marty, Ben Stiller as Alex, Jada Smith as Gloria, etc.). But anyway... this movie is okay, but it's not the ultimate, best movie I've seen in my life.

    Definitely a young kids movie

    I thought it was okay. There wasn't much humor in it and I thought that the concept was pretty dumb. I wouldn't see it again, but I would recommend it to a very young kid who likes animals.

    Kids movie?

    The movie as I see it has an analogy about the fear and courage it takes to step out on your own and stop depending upon corporate America (job) to be your sole revenue stream.(Steak) So if your looking for inspiration to follow your dreams and to live life the way you were supposed too, sit down with the kids, watch this movie. Then begin step by step to apply the principles in this movie till you are truly free.

    Loads of fun for the family

    Haven't just visited Manhattan prior to seeing this movie in theatrical release, I especially enjoyed watching the animated characters interacting in settings I'd just been in - including Central Park and Grand Central Station. Yet, whether or not you recognize any landmarks in the story's initial NYC backdrop, you'll find this tale of liberated zoo animals to be loads of fun -- especially the antics of the penguins and lemurs. This is a family flick that any member of the family wouldn't hesitate to see again.
