Overview

Can a wealthy Republican politician find happiness with a chambermaid from the Bronx? One man is about to find out, though he hardly realizes it at first, in this romantic comedy from director Wayne Wang. Marisa Ventura Jennifer Lopez is a single mother who is raising her gifted but under-confident son Ty Tyler Garcia Posey on her own, with some help from her mother Veronica Priscilla Lopez, after divorcing her husband. Marisa works as a housekeeper at the exclusive Beresford Hotel in Manhattan, where her boss Paula Burns Frances Conroy and chief butler Lionel Bloch Bob Hoskins urge Marisa and her best friend and fellow maid Stephanie Marissa Matrone to be as efficient and inconspicuous as possible. One day, while cleaning the room of noted socialite Caroline Lane Natasha Richardson, Stephanie spies a beautiful designer gown and dares Marisa to try it on; against her better judgment, she does, and while all dolled up, she bumps into Christopher Marshall Ralph Fiennes, a wealthy and well-bred bachelor who is running for the Senate. Immediately charmed, Chris asks Marisa to join him for a walk in Central Park, assuming she's the blue-blooded Caroline. Marisa manages to join Chris for the afternoon, with Ty in tow, and Chris finds himself quite taken with Marisa's beauty and down-to-earth personality, as well as Ty's precocious interest in politics. Chris later calls Caroline's room to set up a lunch date, but soon discovers the stuffy Ms. Lane is not the woman he met before. Marisa is also attracted to Chris, but while her friends encourage her to pursue a romance, Veronica believes her daughter is asking for trouble by trying to win a man so far out of her social strata. The supporting cast also includes Stanley Tucci and Amy Sedaris.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Jennifer Lopez dips into Jenny-from-the-'hood mode to portray a Puerto Rican chambermaid in this frothy romantic comedy, which features the normally dour Ralph Fiennes at his most charming and upbeat. He costars as a wealthy senatorial candidate who makes a luxurious New York hotel his temporary campaign headquarters. J.-Lo, a single mom who dreams of a better life for herself and her son Tyler Posey, is accidentally mistaken by Fiennes for the glamorous socialite whose suite she is cleaning, and a very unlikely romance ensues. Lopez, the daughter of working-class parents, brings credibility to her characterization of the ambitious maid, who realizes that she can't keep deceiving the candidate but dreads telling him the truth. Director Wayne Wang Center of the World, not at all accustomed to working with such material, hews closely to established genre conventions and elicits good performances from his players. Fiennes is surprisingly engaging as the warmhearted politician, Natasha Richardson is delightfully ditzy as the socialite for whom Lopez is mistaken, and Stanley Tucci is deliciously tart as the candidate's win-at-any-cost campaign manager. But it's J.-Lo's show all the way; she holds this modern-day Cinderella story together by force of personality alone. Warm and affecting, she'll make you empathize with the chambermaid so much so that you'll gladly overlook the corny plot devices needed to tie up all the loose ends.
All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
Enlivened by an intermittently gritty feel but marred by some seriously deficient romantic chemistry, Jennifer Lopez's first genuine blockbuster is ultimately a paint-by-numbers Hollywood vehicle that might as well have been produced in 1982 rather than the beginning of the second millennium. With its dashing Republican hero, sanitized class struggle, and Casio keyboard-demo score, Maid in Manhattan is as weirdly retrograde as romantic fantasies come. Director Wayne Wang seems to have tried to channel some of the generalized service-sector empathy that made his Brooklyn anthem Smoke memorable: The film stock and on-location settings are convincingly grungy, and the unforced (if visibly irritable) Lopez does a passable job of playing against her increasingly stratospheric offscreen persona. But the film's script is cobbled together out of the worst kinds of Screenwriting 101 clich├ęs, not the least of which include a quirky-shy moppet of a son and a go-nowhere subplot involving the lead character's clash with her mother's old-world ideals. Still, the most depressing -- and depressive -- aspect of the film may very well be the autopilot performance of Ralph Fiennes, whose drowsy, faux-New England riche speech patterns and soft-focus stare suggest nothing so much as a Kennedy cousin recovering from invasive dental surgery.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert

A skillful, glossy, formula picture, given life by the appeal of its stars.
Boston Globe - Ty Burr
A lovably old-school Hollywood confection.

    To much of a cliche'

I'm tired of the whole girl meets guy out of her league, she lies to him, he forgives her, and they live happily ever after. It just doesn't happen in real life. Not to mention the acting was way too stiff. Nobody except the little boy was relaxed. You'd think after all the movies J-Lo has done she'd either get better or quit. I'm voting for the latter. Even the humor sucked.

I could've died of boredom. *yawn*

''Maid in Manhattan'' was so boring that I fell asleep in the middle of the movie. I was trying to give Jennifer Lopez the benefit of the doubt after falling asleep in her other movie ''The Wedding Planner'', but I was disappointed. She never has any chemistry with her co-stars, not even with her current boyfriend Ben Affleck in their box office disaster ''Gigli''. Her movies are simply boring.

    Great Movie

Excellent feel good comedy. J-Lo and others did an excellent job. Nice to watch a feel good movie without all the violence and bad language. All the actors and actresses deserve a thumbs up, especially the little boy. Looking forward to watching the Wedding Planner.

    This movie was the worst...

This movie was so bad. After all the publicity, I thought it would be really cute. I love romantic comedies, but this movie was so completely unrealistic and corny. This movie was painful to watch, and now I have a lot less respect for Jennifer Lopez as an actress.

    J Lo Does it Again!!!!

If you liked the movie The Wedding Planner, then you will love this movie indeed. She plays the role of a single Mom who wants a better life for herself and her child. Which was very refreshing and realistic because it is common our society today. You will laugh, cry, and be completely satisfied with the outcome of the movie. This movie is defintely for the Jennifer Lopez fan.

    Cute Love Story

I liked this movie a lot. It is a modern Cinderella story. If you like other Jennifer Lopez movies, like the Wedding Planner, and romantic movies you will like this.

    J.LO's movie BLOW

Jennifer Lopez does not show any acting capibilities and does not deserve the recognition she recieves. Ralph Fiennes was truley charming in this movie after THE RED DRAGOn movie. A true movie you must own if you live in MANHATTAN!
