Overview

Harold Becker directs Nicole Kidman and Alec Baldwin in the psychological thriller Malice, which comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible, and the soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer. This is a solid, inexpensive release from MGM/UA that contains strong picture and sound quality.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A slick, sexy thriller punctuated with Hitchcockian plot twists, Malice narrowly skirts the bounds of believability, thanks to the skillful performances of its starring triad. Likable Bill Pullman is well cast as the New England college professor whose campus is being menaced by a mysterious rapist, and whose wife, Nicole Kidman, is suffering from unexplainable abdominal pain. Fortunately, their new boarder, Alec Baldwin, happens to be a brilliant, if arrogant, surgeon who performs a life-saving operation on the ailing spouse -- with unexpected and disturbing results. Director Harold Becker (Sea of Love) freely borrows characterizations and narrative devices from earlier suspense films, but his seamless interpolations actually enhance what could have been a very silly story. Pullman and Kidman perform convincingly, as do the supporting players, distinguished veterans George C. Scott and Anne Bancroft and relative newcomers Bebe Neuwirth, Peter Gallagher, and Gwyneth Paltrow. It's Baldwin, though, who takes top acting honors with his suave turn as the sinister surgeon.
All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
Malice is a loopy and poorly thought-out but fun psychological thriller from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director Harold Becker. Delve too deeply into the plot mechanics and one is bound to come up with plenty of badly executed red herrings, character motivations that are puzzling at best, and plot twists that don't bear up under scrutiny. None of this is the point in a genre potboiler such as Malice, which is really all about the acting and how well the director stages his suspense sequences, and both of those elements are just fine here. Bill Pullman is a bit too much of a dimwit to be believed as a noteworthy scholar, though this is the fault of the material. However, Alec Baldwin is superb as a gifted surgeon whose arguments in favor of his own vanity and delusions of grandeur are compelling and have Sorkin's flair for mental and verbal gymnastics written all over them. Nicole Kidman is sufficiently frosty and aloof in a role that remains a bit of question mark for too long but fares better on a second viewing, once the film's final "secrets" are revealed. It's certainly not Shakespeare, but as pulp fiction goes, this one's a B-movie treat.
