Overview

Longing to discover the identity of her true father before she exchanges her wedding vows, the daughter of a once-rebellious single mother secretly invites a trio of paternal candidates to her upcoming wedding in this feature adaptation of the beloved stage musical. Independent-minded single mother Donna Meryl Streep has always done her best to raise her spirited daughter, Sophie Amanda Seyfried, while simultaneously running a successful hotel on a small Greek island, but now the time has come for this hardworking mom to finally let go. In just a few days, Sophie will be married, and Donna will stand by bittersweetly as her little girl takes flight. Of course, Donna's lifelong friends Rosie Julie Walters and Tanya Christine Baranski will both be present at the wedding, but unbeknownst to the mother, Sophie has furtively invited three very special guests of her own. When Sophie walks down the aisle on that fateful day, she wants her father to hand her off. The only problem is that Donna has never revealed the true identity of Sophie's father, leaving the resourceful future bride to narrow the list down to three potential candidates. Now, as three key figures from Donna's past return to the picturesque Mediterranean shores they all walked 20 years prior, one beautiful bride will discover the secret of her past while one lonely mother finds out that it's never too late for a little romance. Phyllida Lloyd, director of both the original London sensation as well as the hit Broadway incarnation, makes her feature directorial debut with this big-screen version of the beloved musical featuring 22 classic ABBA hits. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, and Dominic Cooper co-star.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Is there anything Meryl Streep can't do? It would be tempting to say "won't do," but that would imply her appearance in Mamma Mia! is somehow shameless. Hardly. Watching the perennial Oscar nominee bounce on a bed like a teenager, kick out her legs, roll around on the ground, and sing her heart out -- without a trace of hesitation -- is another redefining moment for one of Hollywood's most treasured actresses. We know she's a performer with guts, but it never hurts to be reminded. On the whole, Mamma Mia! joyously reminds us how musicals -- especially those set on lush Greek islands -- can transport an audience to delicious realms of pure escapism. The whole cast fully commits, from the logical choices prancing diva Christine Baranski to the surprises stiff-by-design Colin Firth to the fresh-faced newcomers charismatic Amanda Seyfried. In their hands, these songs have the same gusto ABBA must have felt when first writing and performing them. In some cases, gusto alone may not be enough, and Mamma Mia! likely works better for those not comparing the performances to the soundtrack of the popular show. For one, Pierce Brosnan, another plucky outside-the-box choice, seems to have more singing responsibility than he can properly carry. And a small amount of the choreography is inferior, such as the inert staging of Streep's solo "The Winner Takes It All," in which Brosnan is left trying to figure out what to do with his hands. Some of this can be blamed on stage director Phyllida Lloyd's inexperience with this particular medium, but in her first feature film, she's far more deserving of credit than complaint. It's hard to imagine anyone not feeling the rush when an entire village of women comes together to sing "Dancing Queen," finishing with a group plunge into the Aegean.

Just as good as on stage!

I'm only 25 years old, and most of the people my age couldn't sing the words to "Dancing Queen" if you paid them, but I've been an ABBA fan since the age of four. I cannot believe how well the script and characters were built around these songs! It's like the songs and the rest were all written at the same time! I was blown away the first time I saw it on stage, and was a little skeptical when going to see it in the movie theater, but I ended up seeing it twice because it was so good! Meryl Streep is amazing! I had no idea she could sing, but she can sing WELL!! Also, the actresses for Sophie, Tonya, and Rosie were fantastic and really did well with the ABBA music. The three possible fathers were not so great with the singing...but in their defense, they really wouldn't be. Donna and her friends had a singing group years ago, and Sophie got her singing voice from her mom, but the three men have practical jobs and probably no singing experience. I also loved the fact that they made "Lay all your love on me" into a duet. I always thought there was something missing from that song... All in all, a wonderful film. It speaks volumes about the mother/daughter relationship and really touched me. Especially during the holidays, everyone should "take a chance" and watch this show! "My! My! How can you resist it?"

Give me ABBA ... and Fiddler!

My wife and I tried watching Mamma Mia. We both love the music of ABBA since it was the music of our youth. And the storyline seemed promising enough too. It's a premise that reminds me of old time London stage comedies (the ones where misunderstandings and confused identities lead to unexpected and hilarious twists in the plot). Well, we turned it off after 20 minutes. When the characters aren't singing, it's dreadful. The dialog is really over-the-top; some lines are screamed instead of spoken. Each character has a different accent too. It's tough on my ear and jarring to my brain to go from Scottish to American to Aussie to Euro English, all in the span of 15 seconds. And so, I silently prayed for the next song to come in order to be put out of my misery. The songs, as ABBA fans know, are classics. But when one listens to the songs in the movie (which aren't sung by ABBA but rather by the actors), one thinks of how far superior the original versions are. After 60 seconds of singing, one really appreciates how far superior the original versions are. When the song is done, one realizes how far inferior these movie versions are! Then it's back to mind-numbing dialog that is not at all witty or well-delivered ... just loud, annoying, and obnoxious. Perhaps in the 21st minute of the film, the movie gets better, but who knows? We never made it that far. Instead, we put in the Fiddler on the Roof DVD and had a good time with Tevye and Tzeitel.

    ABBA music at its Best!

I absolutely cannot stop watching this movie. I have given this DVD to my friends who as well share the enthusiasm I have. I loved how the music was incorporated into a love story, comedy and marvelous scenery! I want it all! It is hilarious, lively, and colorful. The actors are superb but maybe not the best singers but their rawness is all the better for this movie. Each character was casted perfectly for their part. The scenery was realistic even if it was a sound stage. LOVED IT! and ABBA music is timeless! Excellent actors, set in Greek Islands with ABBA music, what's not to like??

"Mamma Mia here I go again!"

"Mamma Mia here I go again!" A superb cast headed by Meryl Streep create a tour de force of comedy, music and fun ~~ "Mamma Mia" is a celebration of love and life. The Greek island provides an enchanting setting, ABBA's music is delightful, fun and memorable with each song perfectly suited to the story (and each member of the cast sings them rather well), the choregraphy is outstanding; in short, "Mamma Mia" is a film that celebrates life and love. Voila!

    Fun & Entertaining "Chick Flick"

I've seen it several times and always enjoy it. My husband and another male friend did not appreciate it. Some of my friends objected to the "loose morals" of most of the characters. I advise parents of tweens and teens watching it to counsel them regarding the hardships of raising a child as a single parent... this movie provides excellent opportunities to point out and open a dialogue with a teen or tween regarding how quickly and easily "mistakes" (of any kind) can happen and the impact on those involved for the rest of their lives. However, it also provides inspiration that what may appear to be a "mistake" can provide meaning and fulfillment, there is always hope and we don't always know "everything" there is to know about anything!

Meryl Streep is Great! The Movie is a Great Distraction, Good for all Ages!

Some of the characters are good actors, others are good singers, but Meryl Streep shines above all else. With a few minor uneven moments aside, this is one that doesn't get boring with multiple viewings (my daughter loves the music and will watch the moview over and over again...).

A Keeper - gets better every time

I've seen reviews where its said that audiences love this musical (stage and screen) but critics hate it. Frankly, for me it gets better with each viewing (and I forgive actors trying to be professional singers...they try their hearts out and as a result, the real emotion they bring...over 'sing beautifully but without anything real in the feeling' stage singers...is worth it and adds something you typically don't get with a stage performance, or often even with straight singers.)

And frankly, critics typically only approve of things set in a warzone or ethnic war where everyone dies tragically in the end, making an over the top social statement. All that does is make critics think they are special and 'critical'.

What this movie offers is great acting, a great cast, wonderfully fun musical numbers especially with the 'hens' and 'stags'...and a great location where one can believe god and goddess interventions really do happen.

And the plot is based, by the way, off of a WWII Sophia Loren movie...a comedy, but with serious undertones about unwed motherhood...and the daughter didn't get married in that one either, in the end. :)

Cheers All! Just have a glass of wine and enjoy this for what it is...a great, fun movie that you can watch again and again. Worth the money therefore.

THIS WAS NOT MY MOVIE OF CHOICE, BUT WIFE KNOWS BEST. I'VE WATCHED IT 3 TIMES AND 'SING-ALONG' IS GREAT - PREFRABLY NOT IN THE SHOWER. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, GREAT FOR GROUP VIEW!!!

Yes this was not my choice and took us almost a year before we viewed it. What a bad choice, because I would have enjoye this a year ago. Great cast of actors. Meryl Streep was great. My wife enjoyed Pierce Bronson and I enjoyed Christine Baranski (same age as me) as Tanya. If you like Glee on FOX then THIS IS FOR YOU.

    Llamamia Loves Mama Mia

While there is no match for the excitement of attending a live performance of Mama Mia on Broadway, this DVD is an excellent version for in-home viewing. Meryl Streep does a fabulous job of singing & dancing the role of Donna as only this actress extraordinaire can do. And while Pierce Brosnan isn't much of a singer, he is gorgeous to look at. The clever plot is a perfect vehicle to showcase the wonderful ABBA music. And the Greek tourist bureau could easily use the scenes from this film to lure visitors to their lovely islands. Great supporting cast & "joyous celebration"...Mama Mia is a winner!!

Best movie I've seen in fifty years!

The actresses and actors made the picture. It was a movie that you felt like you could join in; as if you were a neighbor. It was a movie my great grandchildren could watch and they range in age 3 yrs. and up. The scenery was breathtaking. The costumes were brillant. Mamma Mia is a movie I could watch everyday and not tire of it.
