Overview

Tony Scott's kidnapping thriller Man on Fire gets a fully loaded initial release to DVD. The image is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1. Spanish and French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Supplemental materials include a pair of commentary tracks. Tony Scott's commentary will please fans, but critics who find his films to be socially irresponsible trash will be able to point to it for evidence of their distaste. A second commentary track with producer Lucas Foster, screenwriter Brian Helgeland, and co-star Dakota Fanning is a more light-hearted track and offers insight into how the film came together. A making-of featurette rounds out this release from 20th Century Fox.

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Denzel Washington is always good, so it’s no surprise to see him effortlessly dominating this taut, violent action film directed with panache by Tony Scott ((Top Gun, Enemy of the State). What is surprising is how skillfully child star Dakota Fanning plays off the veteran actor in their scenes together. Washington is John Creasy, a former Special Forces operative who reluctantly takes a job as bodyguard to Pita Ramos (Fanning), the young daughter of a wealthy Mexican industrialist (Marc Anthony) and his stunningly beautiful Anglo wife (Radha Mitchell). A sullen, morose individual with a drinking problem, Creasy gradually warms to Pita’s sunny disposition -- only to succumb to the dark side of his nature when the girl is kidnapped and presumed murdered. Washington is remarkably convincing as the avenging angel who relentlessly pursues anyone who had a hand in the child’s disappearance. Cold-blooded and ruthless, this character reveals qualities Denzel seldom exhibits on screen; his portrayal of Creasy rivals his Oscar-nominated turn as the crooked cop in Training Day. And Fanning is so adorable -- and so realistic -- that her sudden removal from center stage lends added urgency and apprehension to the story. Scott’s staging is designed to keep viewers on edge throughout; his camera darts every which way and many shots are cut so short that they barely register as flashes on the screen. Action sequences erupt quickly in short, staccato bursts. But the visual pyrotechnics are strictly secondary to the powerful performances of Washington and Fanning, one of the most unlikely -- but most effective -- screen teams in recent memory.

Mr. denzel washington is truly one of the best African american actors in the universe! he was absoluetly AMAZING in this movie! he was born to play Mr. Creasy!!!! Not to mention.... he would really make a GREAT body-guard in real life! Also, ms. dakota fanning, though so young, shows remarkable talent in this movie. she's so cute, and yet, amazing!

"Man on Fire" really surprised me. There was an actual story to it and character development, in addition to the violent action. I have to say that I am a big fan of Dakota Fanning, and in this film she gave probably the best performance of her career so far. She is so incredibly talented, and she's just so sweet, likable, funny, joyous, and moving all at the same time. I can't wait to see more of her films in the future.

Man on Fire is an extraordinary movie. Action-packed. While some may revel in its action, others may be put off by its gore and explicit violence. Ultimatley Man on Fire is more than an action picture. It's a story of character, integrity, human relationships and conditions. Creasy and Pita bond as family and individuals, bringing out the best in each other. When this relationship and humanity is violently disrupted, Creasy reacts with single-minded justice and intent, ultimatley leading to violent showdowns and effort towards his own personal redemption. Denzil Washington again demonstrates that he is one of the most talented actors of his generation;giving a nuanced, developed and layered performance. Fans of his won't want to miss it!

This movie is so raw, Denzel's performance is so riveting and so solid it leaves you stunned. Dakota is so good and brings her A game up against Denzel's already peak performance.I can't wait for this movie to ship.

I'm a fan of Dakota Fanning's after Taken, but I wasn't a Denzel Washington fan until I saw this movie. This movie was SO AWESOME!!! The cast was spectacular. I loved the 'get revenge' plot. I really wish I could've changed the ending (won't tell you), but it was for the best of the film. I highly recommend this movie if you like Danzel or just love alot of blood that isn't a war movie or, for the girls, you'll absolutly love the relationship between Dakota & Denzel's characters. I'M DYING TO SEE IT AGAIN, but I, like everyone else, will have to wait. *tear*

Denzel Washington never disappoints me. I own most of his movies. The action in this one will suit the lovers of action movies. Dakota Fanning and Denzel together will warm the coldest heart.

Denzel has the ability to switch, good guy, bad guy with ease. Dakota's acting superb. Great plot with unforseen results.

There¿s nothing like a movie where a young child changes a man. Especially when there are explosives, knives, and mystery mixed in to create on hell of a movie. Being able to watch the transformation of an alcoholic body guard, to a caring yet dangerous man is truly incredible. I highly recommend that if you haven¿t seen this movie yet... you buy it as soon as possible. As long as a little gore and a lot of action doesn¿t make you cringe. This is the kind of movie that will keep you on your toes till the very end. WOW!!

This movie is my favorite movie yet. It is so riveting and suspensful...leaving you on the edge of your seat. And at the end of the movie was so beautiful yet so sad. Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning are truley wonderous in this movie! 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!

this is not your usual action movie. it contains great action sequences, but the movie centers on emotion and the relationship between creasy and pita. it also has great camera work and cimetography that brings a realism to the film. there is no moment wasted and there are great performances by the cast, from the biggest to smallest roles. great job,Mr. Scott, for bringing us this masterpiece.

An awesome action/drama but this one, as said before, has a story line that is gripping. Lots of unexpected twists in the story line also. It is not your typical happy ending but it does end with a nice "hero" ending. Probably not a good movie choice for kids and young teens due to a little gore and action. Awesome performances by the actors and actresses. I love this movie so much that it does not get put back on the movie rack.
