Some of the humor is predicated upon the wholesale slaughter of the "redskins," and as such is a bit hard to take when seen today. Supporting Taylor and Parker are Victor McLaglen as the heroine's burly father, and TV-stars-to be James Arness (Gunsmoke) and Russell Johnson and Alan Hale Jr. (Gilligan's Island).

With Jeff Richards and Rusty Tamblyn playing Eleanor Parker's frontier brothers and a few leftover green sets from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, a viewer is forgiven for half expecting the entire cast of Many Rivers to Cross to break out in hearty song or perform a lively jig at any given moment. That, of course, never happens; instead you get a sort of post-Revolutionary War Taming of the Shrew with Miss Parker as the absolute center of attention. But just when you think everything is coming up roses, those pesky Shawnees attack again, in a giant cave to boot, and the comedy becomes positively physical with Miss Parker mistakenly hitting hubby Robert Taylor over the head instead of the marauding "Injuns." It is all a bit silly but the Cinemascope landscape is breathtaking.

    Very entertaining movie -- Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker both give wonderful performances in this delightful movie that has drama and comedy.

    Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker make a fantastic couple.

    Many Rivers to Cross is a wonderful comedy. Set in the early pioneer days, Mary Stuart Chern (Parker) is determined to get Bushrod Gentry (Taylor) for her husband. Plenty of laughs and just a bit of suspense abound in this delightful comedy.

    I would recommend this movie for anyone's collection.
