Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Colin Helms
When Marvin Gaye's life was cut tragically short in 1984 by murder at the hands of his own father, the Prince of Motown left behind a soul music legacy that is arguably still unequaled to this day. Just a cursory glance at the set list from this '76 concert in Amsterdam -- "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)," "What's Going On," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" -- defines a chunk of the rhythm & blues canon. More important, this DVD is one of the few documents of Gaye's charismatic live performances, and despite the limitations of the source material -- fairly static camera work, a flat Digital 5.1 audio mix made from the original mono recording -- Gaye's ebullient presence shines convincingly through. Supported by a full band, including backup singers and a horn section, Gaye, ever grinning, floats fluidly and effortlessly through 23 of his '60s and early '70s classics (and nearly brings ladies in the audience to the point of hysteria when he begins to undress during the "Let's Get It On" breakdown). A few staples are disappointingly abbreviated as parts of multi-song medleys, but the sultry grind of songs such as "Inner City Blues" and the smoldering closer "Distant Lover" (the latter of which finds Gaye dropping to his knees in exultation) should provide fans with more than enough sweet soul satisfaction.
