Long resistant to film adaptations of her Mary Poppins books, P.L. Travers finally succumbed to the entreaties of Walt Disney, and the result is often considered the finest of Disney's personally supervised films. The Travers stories are bundled together to tell the story of the Edwardian-era British Banks family: the banker father (David Tomlinson), suffragette mother (Glynis Johns), and the two "impossible" children (Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber). The kids get the attention of their all-business father by bedevilling every new nanny in the Banks household. Whem Mr. Banks advertises conventionally for another nanny, the kids compose their own ad, asking for someone with a little kindness and imagination. Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews in her screen debut) answers the children's ad by arriving at the Banks home from the skies, parachuting downward with her umbrella. She immediately endears herself to the children. The next day they meet Mary's old chum Bert (Dick Van Dyke), currently employed as a sidewalk artist. Mary, Bert, and the children hop into one of Bert's chalk drawings and learn the nonsense song "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" in a cartoon countryside. Later, they pay a visit to Bert's Uncle Albert (Ed Wynn), who laughs so hard that he floats to the ceiling. Mr. Banks is pleased that his children are behaving better, but he's not happy with their fantastic stories. To show the children what the real world is like, he takes them to his bank. A series of disasters follow which result in his being fired from his job. Mary Poppins' role in all this leads to some moments when it is possible to fear that all her good work will be undone, but like the magical being she is, all her "mistakes" lead to a happy result by the end of the film. In 2001, Mary Poppins was rereleased in a special "sing-along" edition with subtitles added to the musical numbers so audiences could join in with the onscreen vocalists.

A fun filled adventure from beginning to end.
Wonderful movie. I watch this with the grandkids and without! The music has become a classic and Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke make this movie magical.
Bought for my grand daughters saw an died as when I saw many years ago
The fantasy and classic kind-heartedness of this movie helps set a tone for my grandchildren. I hope that thy will use a spoonful of sugar to get through the hard-times and recognize that the world can be seen through a negative or positive lens!
Best Uplifting, happy movie ever made!
i love this movie
This is a great movie. It is a good blend of cartoon and human characters. Noone could ever forget Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, and Dick Van Dyke as Bert. The kids in the movie are cute too. I loved the songs in the movie as a kid and I love them still; A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down; Let's go fly a kite, Chim Chiminey, Chim Chiminey Chim Chim Cherie, and Supercalifragilistic expialidocious. The story is cute. It's amazing as a kid that you could jump into a chalk drawing. Mary Poppins is there when the kids need her, and helps get the family through a rough time. Two thumbs up, a great kids movie.
I bought this for myself with a gift card, because I hadn't seen this much-loved movie in years. I put it on for my little girl, who hadn't ever shown much interest in any live-action film, and she was immediately entranced. Now, almost immediately upon waking each morning, she runs to the shelf and brings me the DVD box, saying,"Da Poppy mama, da Poppy!" She's also learning to dance by emulating Dick van Dyke. All in all, a favorite with everyone in our house!
I loved this movie growing up. I hadn't thought about it in years until the commercial for the DVD and I am buying at my next chance. Big hit for the holiday season!
Poppins : the best film on earth ever made !! Julie Andrews was exceptional in this film ! A Classic ! Films has been a family favorite of all ages for yrs & yrs and many more to come.
When I picked up Mary Poppins at the video store, my son protested my choice. However, despite minor protest, he agreed to watch it. I could not believe how much this movie enchanted my 7 year old son!!! He begun dancing around and tried to sing along with the songs that he'd never heard of before. I believe the mixture of music, magic, animations and ''live'' acting combined helped keep my son interested and involved. In addition, it gave my son a chance to experience Walt Disney at his greatest!
One cannot understate the charm and enjoyment of this wonderful film. In our house, it is a favorite of both parents and young children. Many probably recall the dream-like story of the singing and flying nanny who mends the strains of a turn-of-the century British family. We also remember the classic songs like Spoon Full of Sugar, Supercalifragilistic, and Let's Fly a Kite. Less well known is the warm and heartfelt family tale, the charm and wit of the pleasant characters, and the beautiful scenery (all filmed, we learn from the DVD, in a Disney sound studio). This is, quite simply, the greatest family movie of all time.
I forgot what this movie was all about until I rented it at the library for my 2.5 and 4.5 year old girls. We all LOVED it! We continue to sing the songs everyday and it lifts our spirits and makes us dance around the house. My girls are so used to an evil person or witch in movies/shows. Although the president of the bank is a little bit scary to them, it is nothing in comparison to all of the other childrens' movies they have seen. It is wonderful! They are so happy that they can watch the movie without being scared. Needless to say, I have already purchased the CD and DVD as Christmas presents for the girls. I'm sure they will get a lot of use. A classic!! Truly uplifting and says so much about enjoying the little things in life.
My 4 1/2 twin sons really enjoyed the music and were entertained. Mary Poppins is a classic for children of all ages from 4 to 44 and beyond.
Mary Poppins is a very cute and fun movie and I find it to be an excellent feel-good movie to watch when you are sick or even if you are stressed out and need to have your spirits lifted! The whole cast is wonderful but I especially like Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke as Bert and Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber as Jane and Michael. Okay, so Dick Van Dyke's imitation of a British accent is a little over the top but he is so cute in this movie and really entertains!
Watch it and you'll love it. Great for kids of all ages :o)
My daughter is two (almost three) and LOVES ''Miss Poppins'' as she calls her. My husband and I are breathing a sigh of relief because on the 20th viewing of this movie, WE still enjoy it too.
Mary Poppins is one of the many classic Disney films that you and your family will not want to miss! This movie is filled with imagination, magic, music, fun, and much more! Julie andrews first movie debut in which she plays a magical nanny who comes to the Banks family home on Cherry Tree Lane to help bring happiness, laughter, and love back into their home. This special edition 2 disk dvd of Mary Poppins is sure to take you on a magical adventure that you will never forget.
I have been watching this film ever since I was a little girl. I used to watch it everyday and I couldn't get enough of that wonderful score and great special effects for 1964. A smile appears on my face every time I hear the name and you can't help but love Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews at the tops of their talent. Dick Van Dyke is also wonderful as the old man at the bank. The story goes that he wanted to play that part so badly that he told Walt Disney that he wouldn't accept extra pay for it. I love this movie with wonderful acting, score, special effects. It is a feel good family movie that will be popular for years to come.
MARY POPPINS was an instant hit....the last of the big budget live action films supervised by Walt himself...and every minute of the film shows taste, style, wit, heart, imagination and huge, huge talent. What else can one say about a film that made "Our Julie" a household name and worldwide star? It is essential viewing for old and young alike.
It takes you back 'Looking through the eyes of a child' again..Maybe if we became a 'child' again, with this 'Medicine from Mary Poppins', the problems before us would go alot easier. Mary Poppins, don't leave!!!
