Overview

This triple-disc set contains the complete 24 episodes of Season Five of M*A*S*H, in their proper 1.33-to-1 (i.e. full-screen) aspect ratio. The soundtrack, accessible in English and French, is in Dolby Digital Mono, and there are optional English and Spanish subtitles. As with other FoxVideo DVDs, the chapter breaks match the commercial and credit break points in each episode, with a couple of markers delineating plot points. The picture and sound are good enough, and the viewing on this package may prove especially satisfying, even if most of the credit -- beyond a competent transfer, with sharp images and crisp sound -- belongs to the show itself. Season Four of M*A*S*H represented a transitional phase for the series, a major refocusing of the program with the addition of two new key co-stars and the writing out of two key characters. But by 1976, Harry Morgan and Mike Farrell had settled into their respective roles as Colonel Sherman T. Potter, the new commanding officer, and Captain B. J. Hunnicut, the new surgeon; and so, for Season Five, their new blood afforded the writers new avenues of plotting to explore, on a newly personal and complex level for all of the actors and characters, from Alan Alda's Captain B. F. "Hawkeye") Pierce on down -- and that's what's all over this DVD set. From the season opener, a two-parter called Bug Out, in which the army hospital is forced into an emergency move as the battle lines shift dangerously in their direction, the episodes offer new levels of seriousness in their treatment of the subject matter, and far greater depth to the characterizations. And fans of the cast will especially appreciate this season, as everyone -- with the exception of Larry Linville, whose character never got too much beyond one-and-a-half notes (and who was on his way out of the series, as well) -- got to stretch their acting muscles, in episodes such as The Colonel's Horse, Dear Sigmund (an Emmy winner, featuring recurring cast member Allan Arbus), and "End Run." As with the rest of the M*A*S*H DVD sets, the producers have appended no bonus features or supplements, despite the availability of the entire cast and most of the crew from this era of the program, but the series' own content will satisfy most fans.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Fans of this beloved series will savor this three-disc box set, one of its very best, which finds cast members Mike Farrell and Harry Morgan settling into their characters and star Alan Alda beginning to flex the creative muscles. Season 5 gets off to a rousing start with "Bug Out," an episode that finds the 4077th pressed to move camp while Captains Hawkeye (Alda) and B. J. (Farrell) and Major Margaret Houlihan (Loretta Swit) are performing a delicate operation. The apparent disappearance of the erstwhile "Hot Lips" motivates the wacky events of "The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan," in which an invasion of North Korea is narrowly averted. "Mulcahy's War" is a showcase for cast member William Christopher, whose Father Mulcahy becomes frustrated and begins to doubt his effectiveness. Perhaps the season's best episode is "Dear Sigmund," in which Army psychologist Maj. Sidney Freedman (Allan Arbus) visits the 4077th and has his preconceived notions turned upside down. This episode was written and directed by Alda, who wisely kept himself off center stage and gave his fellow cast members ample opportunities to shine. No longer just the anarchic comedy it was originally supposed to be, M*A*S*H by Season 5 had become one of the best-written and most thoughtful shows on television, relying on tried-and-true sitcom conventions for guaranteed laughs but often providing more substantive entertainment as well. The 24 episodes collected in this box represent the show at its peak, making Season 5 a valuable addition to any DVD collection of classic TV programs.
