Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Far removed from his early-1970s critical heyday, director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon) briefly returned to favor with 1985's Mask. Based on the tragic true story of Rocky Dennis, the material rescues its inherently formulaic nature with heartfelt performances from leads Eric Stoltz and Cher -- who won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival -- and a surprisingly compelling script from Anna Hamilton Phelan (Gorillas in the Mist). Bogdanovich sued Universal Pictures after they made alterations to his final cut: most notably, the songs of Bruce Springsteen were replaced by those of Bob Seger to cut costs. Bogdanovich failed to revitalize his career with the film's critical and popular success; his next film was the shockingly bad screwball comedy Illegally Yours. Cher, however, continued to prove herself a worthy actress, culminating in her Best Actress Academy Award in 1987 for Moonstruck.

    I so enjoy MASK

I had to replace my VHS copy of this movie because I wore it out. I am a great fan of Cher and I think she portrade the feelings of any dysfunctional mom with a teen, let alone a teen with a disability. This movie is so heart warming on so many levels.

    Amazing, Inspiring Story

Overall, one of the best movies I have ever seen! After watching this movie, it goes to show that it's the small things that count in life, and that being different is not so bad at all. The story reflects upon the life of Rocky Dennis, a young teenager growing with with his motorcycle mom, who deals with a difficult drug addiction, though for him, is dealing with a rare, uncurable disease, which affects his relationship with the people and world around him, though Rocky manages to remain optimistic and to have a good sense of humor, which causes many to actually enjoy his presence, and like him who who he is as a person, more than how he looks on the outside.

    One of the best!

This movie stands the test of time. With whats happening in our world today, we need a movie like this to come back into our lives and teach us about being different and how that's 'okay.' Being a huge Cher fan, I was always hoping to one day to see some of the deleted scenes that were shot for this movie and yet 'taken out.' The two scenes, adding up to 7 minutes of deleted footage create a feeling of depth and love for the Mother/Son relationship that is so important to this 'true' story. Plus the added bonus of the orig. music back in place and a wonderful look into the casting and making of this beautiful piece of art by the director himself. Do yourself a favor see it again and/or share it with those you love. See why Cher is to be respected as an Actress of unlimited ability.

    ONE OF THE BEST

This is one of the best movies I have seen. Cher is awesome in it and so is Sam Elliott Some of the supporting actors/actresses could have done a better job, but I was so overwhelmed by the movie and the lead performers, I thought about that for a milisecond. SEE THIS IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE!!!
