Well crafted, brilliantly cast series portraying the origins of Colin Dexter's famous Morse character. Shaun Evans creates the character with subtlety, offering the Morse fan insight into the origins of certain elements of the more mature character in the Morse series. Plot lines are substantial and true to the time, including the constraints of detective work in the 60's. Supporting characters are real, including something for everyone. A father figure that the viewer admires and a coworker that the viewer can dislike intensely are added bonuses. Well done and done very Well!

Even if you are not familiar with the earlier "Morse" series (I was truly fascinated by him at the mature stage of his life); now to experience the young Endeavour Morse competes dramatically on its own. It is with continued fascination that one observes the development of Endeavour. The acting is stunning. Shaun Evans so mesmerizes, you are completely immersed in his passions and predicaments. Endeavour's, DI Thursday, Roger Allam, portrays a nobel mentor. With considerable difficulty I made myself watch the series over several days, not wanting to "eat the whole cake" at one sitting.

I purchased this set even though I had previously seen all of the episodes including the pilot. It is the kind of work which causes a person to go back and watch again, picking up nuances that may have eluded or not registered completely. This is a "PREQUAL" in that it catalogs the exploits of young Endeavor Morse starting his police career, leading to the venerable INSPECTOR MORSE series which still remains one of the jewels in the BBC Crown. In these episodes, young Endeavor Morse's innate talents are only spotted by his immediate superior whereas the brass making decisions on a young officer's career believe him to be an unorthodox problem-causer. What today's HR wonks curse with what I believe to be a symbol of superior character: "not a team player." This is superior television.

Watching Endeavour is enjoyable if you know nothing about Inspector Morse. However, if you are a fan of Inspector Morse, watching Endeavour is treat - a long lost friend has returned. Endeavour gives clues to what made Morse who he was. The mystery of Morse is slowly being revealed.

Highly enjoyable as are most British mysteries - along the same line as Inspector Morse and Inspector Lewis. Don't miss this one.
