Though both are bonded by blood to the oft-married Henry VIII, Elizabeth and Mary's stubborn wills clash when the Mary vows to reunite with Rome and the unbreakable Elizabeth makes the potentially fatal decision not to bend to Catholic pressure. Unexpectedly thrust into the throne following Mary's untimely death, Elizabeth struggles to maintain control of a religiously divided nation as numerous enemies conspire against her and the pressures of a politically advantageous marriage become too powerful to resist. With every eligible bachelor in the land vying for her hand in marriage, Elizabeth offers nothing but rejection as she pines for the companionship of her handsome childhood friend Robert Dudley.

Written by Paula Milne, the sweeping series stars Ann-Marie Duff The Magdalene Sisters as Elizabeth I, England’s queen from 1558 to 1603. As the miniseries begins, Queen Mary I Joanne Whalley holds the throne and does everything in her power to undermine support for Elizabeth, including locking her in the Tower of London. The queen eventually dies, and Elizabeth -- with her loyal adviser William Cecil Ian Hart and childhood friend Robert Dudley Tom Hardy backing her -- claims the crown. The remaining episodes explore the tumultuous life of one of England's most famous monarchs, from her unfortunate relationships and struggles to bear an heir to the triumphs and failures of her 44-year reign.

    Beautiful

    That is the only way to describe this mini-series. Ann Marie Duff as Elizabeth is breathtaking and passionate. Tom Hardy captures the essennce that is Robert Dudley. It was a sigh of relief to see this time in history finally done correctly and given its proper due. If you are looking to find a good watch and get a very good rendition of Elizabethean England this is the mini-series for you. After all, no one does it like the BBC can.
