An excellent production: stays true to the book

Based on Thomas Hardy's novel, this story is tragic but beautiful. Everyone should see this film; even people who didn't think they would like it ended up being captivated by the story and the scenery.

    Great Adaptation!

Thomas Hardy's tragic novel is almost too good in print to attempt making into a film; but the BBC did a beautiful job with this adaptation (as they usually do). Not only was it true to the book, but it was a visual masterpiece. The acting was terrific, save for some of Tess's scenes. She was pitiful and moving, to be sure, but at times felt too rehearsed and delicate -- the raw sorrow of Hardy felt somewhat muted. But Arterton is especially pretty, and all things considered she was a wonderful pick to play the sympathetic heroine. Matheson gave a very believable performance as Alec the villain, and Redmayne made one want to squeeze and kick Angel all at the same time. For lovers of the novel (and it would behoove one to read the wonderful book before watching the film), this adaptation is highly recommended; the length (near 4 hours) might intimidate, but in the rare dull moments, one can take in the beautiful scenery of Wessex (Essex). The final 30 minutes are well worth the wait.

Visually stunning, excellent actors, fullfills its name-Masterpiece

I watched it on PBS & now I'm getting the DVD. This is a version I want to watch again & again. Gemma Arterton portrayal of Tess is heart-wrenchingly authentic. The whole production is very well done.

    Very Sad

This has to be one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. I endured all of her pain in hopes of a happy ending but was dissapointed to see the tragic ending to a life of pain and suffering. That said the acting was skillfully done. The actors and actresses were well chosen for their parts. You could not help but love Tess, a truly beautiful girl. The villian was played artfully. Her husband was incredible in his perfomance.
Well done but too sad. The show deserves a five star for acting and stage setting but the sadness of the story makes me hesitate to recommend since I love happy endings.

    A Heart Wrenching Masterpiece

Beautifully directed, excellent acting performances. Romantic but intense, I cried my way through half this movie. Definitely not one you can or would want to watch over and over again without some months in between to recover. It is a very romantic, happy, blissful & tragic story. I would recommend.
