Overview

The three surviving members of the trail-blazing rock band MC5 -- bassist Michael Davis, guitarist Wayne Kramer, and drummer Dennis Thompson -- reunited for a special show with some special guests at London's 100 Club in the spring of 2003, and this DVD release presents the subsequent concert film with a healthy selection of bonus materials. Sonic Revolution: A Celebration of the MC5 - Live at London's 100 Club has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1, which has also been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The audio appears in three different formats: Dolby Digital Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS 5.1. The quality of both sound and image are fine, but not exceptional, with the audio mix a bit on the thin side, and the glitches in the performances are not cleaned up for this release. The songs are performed in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options included. The disc's bonus materials generally outclass the concert itself; there's a short documentary on the band's background (with some interesting interviews with the bandmembers), a selection of concert and documentary outtakes, three vintage television appearances (two lip-synched performances from a Canadian teen music show, and a live improvisation on "Black to Comm" from a Detroit public television broadcast), United States Department of Defense surveillance footage of the group's appearance at the protests which coincided with the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago (unfortunately silent), home movies of the group's old Detroit neighborhood and the ill-fated 1967 Belle Isle Love-In (also silent, but with commentary from Davis, Kramer, and Thompson), and the original promotional clip for the song " Kick Out the Jams" (which also features an optional commentary from the musicians). Much of the bonus material also appears in the film MC5: A True Testimonial, which, frankly, does a far better job of capturing what made the MC5 one of America's most powerful bands than this partial reunion gig does, but given the legal problems currently keeping that film out of circulation, this disc at least presents some period MC5 footage to the fans who've never had the chance to see the band documented in their prime.
