Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Two half sisters, separated at childhood, are reunited 20 years later in the wake of their cattle-rancher father's death. Claire (Lisa Chappell) grew up on the ranch and is now determined to save the financially struggling family business. Tess (Bridie Carter), from the city, wants to sell her share of the property to realize her dream of running a café. But sisterhood wins out, as Tess develops a bond with her long-lost sibling as well as with the majestic landscape. She also becomes involved in the personal lives of the all-female crew, including Becky (Jessica Napier), a wild girl who takes refuge on the ranch after she is raped (off-screen); Meg (Sonia Todd), the maternal housekeeper with some scandalous family secrets in her closet; and Jodi (Rachael Carpani), her coltish 18-year-old daughter. This box set corrals all the first season episodes from this enormously popular Australian series that originated with a 1996 made-for-TV movie (included in this collection) that was something of a phenomenon in its native country. The colorful characters are admirably independent and self-sufficient. When Claire catches the male ranch hands stealing in the first episode, she fires them all. "You can't run this place without us," they proclaim. "Watch me," she replies. Tess may initially be something of a fish out of water (upon her arrival, she unwittingly leaves a gate open, allowing cattle to escape), but she is hardly a superficial city slicker. The charismatic cast and beautiful scenery are appealing enough, but it's the soap opera developments, ranging from the illness of beloved animals to apparent murder, that make this empowering series instantly addictive. Becky's unfolding drama is the most compelling subplot. Two brothers from a neighboring ranch provide some romantic sparks. Parental advisory: McLeod's Daughters is not The Saddle Club -- there is some down to earth talk about sex and some mild innuendo.

I was so excited when I saw that B&N was carrying the McLeod's Daughters DVD for US viewing. This is a fantastic story about strong determined women in a man's world. The actors are wonderful, th story line is genuine and interesting which makes the characters they play endearing to the viewer. The scenary is beautiful, showing the best bits of south Australia. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

McLeod's Daughter's is an original Australian TV show, with high quality writing, acting and scenery. The series as a whole is character driven, with good stories about people you really care about. What makes this series unique is that horse/sheep/cattle station where the action takes place is run by 5 women. Not to worry, there are plenty of men on the show, and lots of good eye candy for both genders. Season One synopsis: The series is about two half-sisters, separated as children who reunite as adults to jointly work the family ranch after the parents have all died. There is country-girl Claire who grew up on Drovers Run and is making a go of it, when city-girl Tess shows up, expecting to collect her inheritance in cash. As Tess learns the realities of cash-strapped ranching she reconnects with both her sister and the land where she was a young child. We are introduced to the other residents of Drovers Run, and the surrounding Gungellan area, through Tess' eyes. Her warm, outgoing personality wins over the viewer as easily as anyone on the show. McLeod's Daughter's is a DVD set well worth owning. I only wish we knew more info about additional content.

This is a fabulous series! It has wonderful characters with real emotions and feelings. They have fun, work hard, and get through the trials and tribulations of life together. Fun story of 2 sisters and 3 other women running a cattle station in Australia. 2 brothers help run station next door. Simply EXCELLENT - you very rarely find this quality show on US television! Anxiously waiting for seasons 2 - 6 on American DVD!!
