Overview

Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live wrote and appears in this comedy about the alternately funny and terrifying pecking order among teenage girls. Cady Heron Lindsay Lohan is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa, where she was home-schooled by her zoologist parents. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the "cool" kids, and so on. Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as "the Plastics," led by Regina George Rachel McAdams, Gretchen Weiners Lacey Chabert, and Karen Smith Amanda Seyfried. While Cady is grateful for her new friends, it doesn't take long for her to realize how manipulative they can be, and she soon discovers she's violated an unwritten law when she goes out on a date with Aaron Jonathan Bennett, who is charming, good looking...and Regina's former boyfriend. It isn't long before Regina and her pals are on the warpath, and Cady must face a level of vengeful behavior for which years in the jungle never prepared her. Joining Tina Fey in the supporting cast are fellow SNL players Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, and Tim Meadows. The screenplay for Mean Girls was based in part on Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends and Other Realities of Adolescence, a book by professional youth counselor Rosalind Wiseman.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This is the smartest, sassiest teen movie to come down the pike in a long while, and most of the credit belongs to Saturday Night Live's Tina Fey, who based on her script on a nonfiction book, Queen Bees and Wannabes. Fey's adaptation is set in a midwestern high school where transfer student Cady Heron Lindsay Lohan, previously homeschooled and blissfully unaware of the social conventions dictated by her peers, falls in with a small clique of girls known as "the Plastics." Led by spoiled, beautiful Regina George Rachel McAdams, the Plastics live by their own rules and show nothing but disdain for their fellow students, a few of whom persuade Cady to undermine the catty in-group. Director Mark Waters -- whose brother Daniel directed the influential teen comedy Heathers -- gives Mean Girls a brisk pace with fast-moving sequences and inventive transitions that speed the action. He's also fortunate to have a terrific script from which to work: Fey writes tart dialogue and builds imaginative set pieces around some of the situations and character types described in Queen Bees. There isn't a high school graduate alive who won't recognize in Regina and her acolytes the stuck-up girls who cheerfully toyed with adoring boys and disdained female classmates who weren't as pretty or popular as they were. Canadian actress McAdams is absolutely spot-on in her performance as Regina and is well supported by Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried as the other Plastics. Fey writes herself a juicy part as a recently divorced teacher who runs afoul of the clique, and her fellow SNL players Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler, and Ana Gasteyer get colorful supporting roles as well. But Lohan really dominates the film with her energetic portrayal of an innately kind young woman who yields to temptation and, temporarily at least, becomes a queen bee.
All Movie Guide
Based on Rosalind Wiseman's nonfiction best-seller Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence, Mean Girls is a success in that it delves into one of the lesser exploited aspects of teen comedy -- the innermost dynamics of backstabbing among adolescent girls. Complemented by a slew of SNL regulars and alumni -- particularly Amy Poehler's turn as a desperately eager-to-please, aging, and augmented trophy wife of a mother -- the film is best when at its bitchiest. To its credit, protagonist Cady (Lindsay Lohan), whose only previous educational experience was provided by her zoologist parents in the wilds of Africa, is not the pure-hearted heroine of teen flicks past. Her agenda of sabotaging the Plastics (the school's most simultaneously feared and envied clique, led with aplomb by "professional life-ruiner" Regina George [Rachel McAdams]) from the inside may have begun with noble intentions, but when her efforts land her the head position in the "army of skanks" she had sought to dismantle, she is hardly reluctant to assume the role, at least initially. However, for pegging the darker subtleties of high school so well -- the lunchroom caste system, the mechanics of manipulation, the evolution of a rumor, transitions of power, and the ever-present threat of weight gain, to name a few -- Mean Girls loses a certain amount of punch in its ham-fisted later half, which involves an excruciatingly out-of-place trust fall and a clich├ęd speech (at the Spring Fling, no less) in front of the entire student body. Yet, despite several cheesy epiphanies, Mean Girls is a self-aware, solid effort at dissecting the superficialities of high-school life, particularly for post-Columbine times. Besides, there's always Heathers.

    So Fetch!

"Mean Girls" is by far my all time favorite movie. It is funny, the sory line is great, and it has an amazing cast. Lindsay Lohan plays Cady, a transfer student from Africa who moves to an American high school. She portrays this act perfectly. She goes from a fashion victim to a fashionista. All the actors play their parts well. It is just like every high school. There is drama and Comedy. It will surely bring you back to your awkward high school years. I have seen this movie so many times that I know every line by heart. It is such an amazing movie. You will find yourself relating to characters, hating the mean girl, and even loving the "cute guy" Aaron Samuels. It will be your favorite movie too! So, go to your local movie store and pick up a copy of "Mean Girls" now!

    Mean Girls

I don't think these girls were very kind. Gretchen was too fetch and it made me uncomfortable when i watched this movie. Regina was very cruel and I cried when she got pushed in front of the bus. Cady was swell but i think she shouldn't have stopped eating after the movie was filmed. Although she is mean, I'll send her some food.

    Mean Girls

This movie is very funny for girls mainly between 12-20. I really enjoyed it even more the second and third times I watched it. Rachel McAdams (though not as famous when she made this movie) who plays Regina George, is very funny. Once you've seen Rachel's other more serious roles, it is very humorous to see her 'Preppy'. Lohan also does a very good job in this movie, which makes up for her performance in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. Overall this movie is very humorous and gives an insight of what truely goes on in modern day highschool.

Mean Girls was a very funny movie!

Mean girls was one of the best funny movies i have ever seen. It seems like in every sence there would be something really funny. All of my friends loved the movie. I also really loved the acters in this movie. They did a very excellent in the movie. When i frist saw the movie Mean Girls i was laughing through the whole movie. I loved how they had the burn book, where they would write nasty things about all they girls in their grade. My favorite part in the movie is when Cady played by Lindsey Lohan, trys to ruin one of the meaniest girls in the school life. This movie is one of the best funny chich flicks i seen yet. I watch this movie almost every week and I still have not gotten sick of this movie. I would tell anyone who likes funny chick flicks to watch this movie. It was GREAT movie!

    Fantastic!

When my friends brought this movie to my house I thought, "great another stupid teen film". However, when it was over I was amazed. Not since the movie Heathers was I as impressed with a film about high school. If you have ever dealt with evil teeanage girls, or if you were one, this is the movie for you.

    **Hilarious

Tina Fey is a brilliant writer for this movie. She needs to make more movies like Mean Girls! I love her on SNL, and I wished she wasn't leaving. I hope her new show on NBC does good. The greatest line from the movie is what the sex ed teacher says. Mean Girls is such a great movie!
