Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
John McTiernan's enviro-conscious suspense thriller is a departure from the director's normal blood-and-guts fare. Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco entertain with their odd-couple exchanges amid a lively rain forest backdrop similar to McTiernan's earlier work in Predator. There is an interesting strain of environmental backlash, as slash-and-burn big business and the bulldozers of progress cost the world a cure for "the plague of the 20th century." Also, Connery's character has an almost Kurtz-like quality, a renegade in a lonely jungle far away from the tides of civilization, but the film simply is too intellectually flat to push the Heart of Darkness comparison any further. The congruent story lines and slow, methodical pace of the film are the strong points here; overall, the film's pseudo-mysticism does not detract from its quiet charm.

    I Also Recommend:

Medicine Man is one of my all-time favorite movies. I've used it with my biology classes for years. It opens up good discussions on field research and deforestation in the Amazon.

Long before it was popular, this film addressed some of the ethics considerations in field research with indigenous people. It portrays the native population in an honest way and talks directly about continuing research into medicinal plants, particularly in the rainforest ecosystems. This film has a powerful impact on my middle school students and hopefully encourages them to go further in their study of botany. Companion video is "Spirits of the Rainforest" by Taurus Productions, an emmy winner.

I Could Watch It A Million Times.

I love this movie! It's not only funny, it tells of the rain forest being destroyed. I love Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco. They is so funny, the way they go back and forth putting each other down, yet falling in love at the same time. It's enjoyable to watch and educational at the same time.<BR/>I can't even count how many times I've watched this movie and I catch something different every time I watch it from the time before. I recommend it to everyone. So, now I want to watch it again since I started writing this review. You won't be sorry.

    Great movie

I have watched the movie several times. I believe the rivalry and the humorus banter between Connery and Bracco is the funniest I've seen in the movies for a while. Sean Connery has become a great actor has gotten better looking with age.
