Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Meet Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette): supportive wife, harried mother of three, and a psychic who talks to dead people. Before Jennifer Love Hewitt went all Ghost Whisperer in September 2005, NBC offered up Medium in January, garnering its highest ratings (and 16.1 million viewers) for a premiere drama in four years. Created by Moonlighting executive producer and writer Glenn Gordon Caron, Medium was inspired by the real-life Allison Dubois, a medium who often helps the police with criminal cases. In the pilot, Arquette's Dubois, cursed with being able to "see" since childhood, finds herself being bombarded in her dreams with images of a homicide. She turns to her husband, Joe (Jake Weber), for help, and he sends out the information to several law enforcement agencies, hoping to convince her the dreams are nothing more than figments. However, when a case in Texas matches her description, Dubois (working part-time in the prosecutor's office) reluctantly goes to District Attorney Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) and tells him about her gift. Recognizing her talents, Devalos hires Dubois to consult on open cases. Thus starts Dubois's career as a psychic criminal profiler, which sometimes takes her away from her two oldest girls, Ariel (Sofia Vassilieva) and Bridgette (the wonderful Maria Lark). David Cubitt plays skeptical detective Lee Scanlon, tasked with researching Dubois's insights and bringing in the murderers of the people who are "speaking" through her. Medium finds the perfect balance between the struggles with Dubois's family life and her dedication to her gift. The scenes with Joe and her kids ground the series in reality and never slow the pace -- which is an especially difficult task, considering the supernatural events that surround Dubois. Emotionally affecting as well, Medium is a welcome addition to the sci-fi television genre.
