Overview

Vulgar, crude, and occasionally scandalous in its racial humor, this hilarious bad-taste spoof of Westerns, co-written by Richard Pryor, features Cleavon Little as the first black sheriff of a stunned town scheduled for demolition by an encroaching railroad. Little and co-star Gene Wilder have great chemistry, and the delightful supporting cast includes Harvey Korman, Slim Pickens, and Madeline Kahn as a chanteuse modelled on Marlene Dietrich.

As in Young Frankenstein 1974, Silent Movie 1976, and High Anxiety 1977, director/writer Mel Brooks gives a burlesque spin to a classic Hollywood movie genre; in his own manic, Borscht Belt way, Brooks was a central player in revising classic genres in light of Seventies values and attitudes, an effort most often associated with such directors as Robert Altman and Peter Bogdanovich . Some of this film's sequences, notably a gaseous bean dinner around a campfire, have become comedy classics.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This deluxe set compiles eight comedies directed -- and in most cases written or co-written -- by funnyman Mel Brooks, whose apprenticeship included stints with Your Show of Shows in the 1950s and a performing partnership with Carl Reiner. The collection is a mixed bag, composed more or less equally of classics, solid entertainments, and disappointing mediocrities. Mel’s second directorial effort, The Twelve Chairs 1970, was deemed a disappointment by many, although it enjoys a better reputation today. His two 1974 films, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, are widely considered to be his best, and in truth they hold up better than many of the others in this box. Silent Movie 1976, a fascinating but flawed attempt to replicate the slapstick comedy of yore, was Mel’s first as leading man as well as writer-director. He also took the starring role in High Anxiety 1977, an intermittently hilarious parody of Hitchcockian thrillers, then took a hiatus of several years before returning as part of an ensemble cast in The History of the World, Part I 1981, which showed a reliance on trite gags but managed to generate some good laughs nonetheless the French Revolution segment, in particular. To Be or Not to Be 1983, Brooks’s remake of the 1942 Ernst Lubitsch classic which starred Jack Benny and Carole Lombard, was a dream project: Brooks cast himself in the Benny role and wife Anne Bancroft in Lombard’s part, but the remake lacked the original’s savoir-faire. Robin Hood: Men in Tights 1993 returned to the genre spoof Brooks popularized with Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, and with talented Cary Elwes in the title role, it marked a return to form. A few entries from the Brooks C.V., due to rights issues, are not included: the original Producers and its new musical version; Spaceballs, his late-to-the-table Star Wars parody; the My Man Godfrey-inspired Life Stinks; and Dracula: Dead and Loving It, featuring Leslie Nielsen as the titular bloodsucker. Still, this is a formidable dose of Brooks, and a must for devotees of his comic genius.

A Great Boxset for Fans of Mel Brooks!

I'm a huge fan of Mel Brooks' comedy movies and I just recently bought this boxset collection which has 8 of his movies. The only movie in the set that I already had on DVD is Young Frankenstein and the only movie in the set that I had never seen was History of the World Part 1. My favorite movies in the set are Silent Movie, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, Blazing Saddles, and Robin Hood Men in Tights which are all very funny, and I also like The Twelve Chairs, and To Be Or Not to Be. My least favorite movie in the set is History of the World Part 1 which I actually just watched tonight for the first time and while the movie had some funny parts it also had some unfunny parts, but I like all of the other movies and this boxset was worth buying!

    It's about time

It's about time that Mel Brooks got his collection released as a box set, included in this are several movies that have until now never been available on DVD. Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Silent Movie being classic examples. While not all of his titles are represented in this set (Spaceballs, The Producers, Dracula: Dead and Loving It...), it does include most of the best. I for one am truly looking forward to putting this up on my shelf as the standard of timeless comic movies. Finally one of the greatest comic directors gets his due.

    more from this reviewer

    Mel Brooks nuf said

I have not seen some of the movies in the box before but about 2/3 I have seen at least parts of and found them to be very funny. I feel that they should include some of his later work to include Space balls and one of his older works The Producers. With Zero Mostel. The movies are unforgetable I find myself doing the dialog with the characters and find it funny every time. Seeing these movies several times is a must to get the full effect of Mel's comedy genius.
