Overview

Otherworldly villains are on the loose again, and it's up to Earth's interstellar police force to bring them to justice in this sequel to the sci-fi comedy blockbuster Men in Black. Agent Jay (Will Smith) has become a high-ranking member of the Men in Black, the secret government task force designed to deal with unruly visitors from other worlds, while his former cohort, Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), had his memory wiped clean and now lives a simple but contented life as a mailman. However, an especially nasty alien threat has reared its not-so-ugly head; Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle) is a shape-shifting Kylothian alien who is in pursuit of another escaped visitor who holds the key to powers that would allow her to destroy the world. Making Serleena all the more dangerous is the fact she's taken on the appearance of a lingerie model, making her irresistible to most men. When the rampaging Serleena takes control of the MIB offices, Jay is forced to turn to the only man who can help him save the world -- the former Agent Kay. The disc is given the superbit treatment which maximizes the quality of both the sound and the picture.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Every bit as entertaining as its 1997 predecessor, this high-spirited, effects-laden romp reunites Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones for more sci-fi fun and explosive action. Director Barry Sonnenfeld, who also directed the first MiB, sticks pretty close to the winning formula he established for the initial film but mixes in a few new elements to spice things up. This time around, Lara Flynn Boyle portrays an evil alien who assumes a luscious humanoid form while paving the way for Earth's conquest. It falls to INS special agent Smith working in the top-secret division entrusted with keeping tabs on visiting extraterrestrials to bring the long-retired Jones back into the fold, because his ex-partner's brain holds the vital clue to identifying and apprehending the recently arrived invader. Smith's boyish demeanor and Jones's deadpan trouping make MiB II a real delight; moreover, they receive capable support from Boyle, Rosario Dawson, and returning cast members Rip Torn and Tony Shalhoub. Terrific makeup effects and computer-generated animation are employed skillfully, and some of the aliens including one disguised as a bulldog are just as funny as their human costars. Occasionally witty and always surreal, this madcap sequel is guaranteed to tickle the funny bones of those who loved the original. The two-disc DVD Collector's Edition features a Sonnenfeld commentary, as well as featurettes covering every aspect of MiB II's making, including production design, makeup, animatics, and other visual effects, sound recording, and music scoring. There's also an alternate ending, a music video by Will Smith, a blooper reel, and DVD-ROM content, including script-to-screen comparisons.
All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
The original Men in Black had a sense of discovery about it. Tommy Lee Jones had not been known for his comic ability, and Will Smith was not yet the superstar that he would become. They and director Barry Sonnenfeld went all-out to create an audience pleasing eye-popping fast-paced comedy. Five years later, the sequel fails to capture the giddy fun of the original, but it is a competent and enjoyable piece of summer product. Where Men in Black was Tommy Lee Jones' film, the sequel relies more heavily on the ease and charm of Will Smith. His comfort in front of a camera helps make the implausible events and characters he is surrounded by all the more believable. It is easy to laugh when his canine partner starts singing disco standards, but mostly because Smith never winks at the audience. Except for the hilarious turns from Patrick Warburton and David Cross there is nothing here that seems anything other than familiar. Everyone involved seems to care enough that the film plays less like a cynical cashing in than like the work of smart salesmen who know that if customers like them, customers will come back again.

Great Effects, Big Laughs, Awesome Dog

The sequel is actually funnier than its predecessor, which is rare. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones play off each other very well, but Frank the Pug steals whatever scene he's in! A great movie for everyone and a must have for pug lovers everywhere!

One of the worst of 2002

Despite reading some of the critics' reviews to the tune of ''Even better than the first!'' and ''Jones and Smith have never been funnier'', follow my advice before you waste money on the stinky, sad pile of studio waste. Now I liked the original MIB, but this flat sequel has NONE of the charm or humor that made the original worth watching. Jones and Smith have no chemistry, the script is pathetic, and the special effects are almost shockingly bad at times. I could barely make it through (in fact it took two sessions to watch it). Really people... this is an awful movie.

    Better than the first!

This DVD is great for anyone who loved the first Men in Black. It's hilarious as Tommy Lee Jones tries to fit his way back into the business. Plus this DVD has loads and loads of extra features including how they made the aliens, how they did sound, and even the music video. It keeps you busy for hours!

    Rent it or buy it!

I think the sequel was actually as good as the first! Which is rare with movies. However both the original version and the subsequent sequel were amazing! Both are funny, action-packed, and downright comical classic hits. The dynamic duo, Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, brought their very talented acting skills to the movie and I was impressed with the rest of the cast as well. Definitely check it out!
