Overview

The limited edition of Men in Black is packaged in a hinged cardboard box that has room enough for two discs, a booklet, a folded mini-poster, and a foam insert. The expanded package includes additional bonus features, an additional commentary track, and of all things, a pan-and-scan version of the film that is not otherwise available (though why this decision was made remains a mystery). The first disc contains the movie itself, presented here in a nice, sharp, anamorphic transfer with solid blacks, excellent color balance, and little in the way of artifacts. The data transfer rate is kept consistently high throughout. The audio is very good, with a standout Dolby 5.1 track, as well as Dolby Surround tracks in English and French. The main commentary, by director Barry Sonnenfeld and actor Tommy Lee Jones, uses an overlay technique that has the pair silhouetted in front of the picture pointing things out (often via onscreen visual aids.) The track is somewhat informative -- mainly as to the convoluted development of the script -- but too often strains for humor, only to fall flat. The "Technical Commentary," meanwhile, is more a collection of comments from a variety of sources, assembled to be somewhat scene-specific; though informative, it is sometimes on the dull side. The second disc contains the extras, which range from visual-effects sequence "deconstructions" of the tunnel sequence and part of the end battle with the Edgar Bug, to a scene-editing workshop that gives viewers three scenes, with three shot choices each, and allows them to experiment with cutting the scenes together. This feature is fun to play with, and seems to work well. There are conceptual art and production photo galleries (expanded in this edition), a feature on the creatures from concept to execution, extended and alternate scenes (none of which seem to fit well with the movie as it is), trailers, a featurette, a documentary on the development and making of the film, the music video for "Men in Black," talent files, and DVD-ROM material with World Wide Web links. About all that's missing is the script and digitized versions of the original comics. All together an entertaining and informative package that does a good job of trying to push the limits of the DVD format, though there is certainly room for quite a bit more even here.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
Paranoia was never this much fun. Everyone from weathermen to unwashed dirt farmers is a potentially murderous space alien in this science-fiction comedy that mixes laughs with fast-paced action and spectacular special effects. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith shine as a straight-as-an-arrow special agent and a fast-talking NYPD cop who form an unlikely partnership to rid the earth of extraterrestrial intruders. As imaginative and absurd as the comic-book series that inspired it, Men in Black is an entertaining send-up of self-important sci-fi flicks -- a blockbuster action film that delivers all the expected thrills while managing to revel in its own silliness. The limited-edition two-DVD set is a stellar package with "visual commentaries" from the director and stars, the Men in Black music video, storyboard and photo galleries, and several scenes with multiple angles.
All Movie Guide - Robert Firsching
Because of its extensive ad campaign and huge box-office grosses, some viewers may be surprised at the comparatively small scale of this fun little science-fiction comedy. In fact, most of the reason the film works as well as it does is not the special-effects aspect, which is relatively modest, but the chemistry between its two leads. Tommy Lee Jones' wonderful deadpan delivery works as a perfect counterpoint to Will Smith's often frantic energy, and both actors are a joy to watch. The alien monsters are mostly of the cute and cuddly variety, making it more suitable for children than most violent alien epics of recent years, and it's so much fun that it's one of the rare films which actually raises hopes for a sequel.

    Hilarious With A Twist!!! :-)

I love how this movie is funny, but scary as in a Oh-My-God-That-Dude-Just-Shot-Another-Guy's-Head-Off way. I love movies like this one. I totally recommend MIIB (Men In Black Two) after you've seen this one! Even though it's rated PG-13, all ages (except for the youngsters) will love this epic movie!
