A must watch for anyone who enjoys fantasy

At first I thought Merlin was going to be a cheesy British show that wouldn't live up to my expectations. However I was completely addicted after the first episode. The series follows the story of the early years of the legend of Prince Arthur and of course Merlin. Colin Morgan present a Merlin who is young, who is somewhat foolish but dedicated to the task of keeping Arthur safe, of ensuring that Arthur will live to be King. Bradley James plays Arthur as a "royal prat", burdened with the task of keeping his people safe and willing to do so even if it costs him his own life.

All in all the series is one worth while, it's entertaining, it's humorous and with the British actors and accents...what's not to love?

    Fun Family Fantasy Entertainment!

Our family recently stumbled upon the BBC series, "Merlin". The second season is currently airing on the SyFy Channel. We were enjoying the episodes so much, that when the entire first season became available on DVD, we had to buy it. The story centers on the relationship between Merlin, the young magician who cannot reveal his powers for risk of death, and Prince (the future king) Arthur. It's Merlin's destiny to protect Arthur at all costs. This leads to many exciting adventures. It's a fun, engaging series that our family looks forward to watching together. The actors are wonderful and the scenery is realistic and lovely. As with any fantasy-type of show, it's always fun, because any storyline is possible.

    Merlin, the 1st season complete

For those of us who liked this TV series, this collection is a good additional to your video collection. The featurette "Behind the Magic" adds to the enjoyable of the series by adding interesting insights to how and why it is done. The characters are all interesting and likeable, even the character of Uther Pendragon whose hatred of the use of magic and orders the execution of anyone caught using sorcery, causes many of the problems in his kingdom of Camelot.
This series deviates a great deal from the traditional mythology and stories of Merlin, King Arthur, and Camelot, but it is very entertaining.
As the series was shown on NBC in high definition, it would have been very nice of BBC to have a high definition collection. That is one of the failing of the BBC video collections, little to no high definition videos.

    I Also Recommend:

Suspend Disbelief; Bask in a Rich Fantasy World

The first season of the BBC's Merlin has just the right blend of humor, drama, romance, and action. It also offers moments of tongue-in-cheekiness, and it is beautifully filmed.

Guest villains and simulated magical creatures can be unsurprisingly cheesy, but the dragon, voiced by John Hurt, is a treat upon every appearance. All the starring actors in the series bring gravitas and levity at the right moments, and bring their characters fully to life.

This take on the Arthurian legend is fresh and interesting. If you enjoyed the early development of the relationship between the Smallville series' Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, you'll appreciate that of Merlin and Arthur on this program, particularly with the similarity in theme of one keeping secret his growing powers from the other. Merlin is well worth watching -- and re-watching.

    I Also Recommend:

    Simple family fun

This series is a well imagined retelling of the legend of Merlin and King Aurthur as budding, adolescent heroes. It is not a heavy series whatsoever, which is why it is such a delight to watch. The creators have fun with the characters and they develop well over the series. The production value is not quite on par with .. say Xena, but it's decent enough to kee watching and watching and watching. Fine for kids.

This show is absolutely wonderful, well written, and kid friendly.  It is sad there were only 5 seasons.  I wish they would continue at least one more season.  The actors played their roles very well and you could see the special relationship they all had.  Exceptional show!

    Supernatural Camelot

“Merlin: The Complete First Season” is a mystical and uplifting show around the spiritual tests of each character in Merlin. All the actors contributed in each way towards the outcome of the overall resident well-being in Camelot. Colin Morgan cleverly plays the character of a Merlin who must help King Arthur Pendragon(powerfully played by Bradley James) without revealing the use of magic. John Hurt plays a compelling role of “The Great Dragon”, a being who Merlin secretly consults with for help in magically prevailing over various tests.Richard Wilson plays Gaius, a firm and wise mentor to Merlin. Anthony Head plays the convincing role of Uther Pendragon, a headstrong father to King Arthur who is extremely brutal to those caught practicing magic. However, Head’s portrayal of Uther also means well in protecting his son Arthur Pendragon and maintaining a good kingdom for his citizens. Angel Coulby and Katie MCGrath persuasively play the characters of Guinevere and Lady Morgana Pendragon. I also really enjoyed that the show portrays two female characters that are loyal friends to each other. Additionally, Katie McGrath’s Lady Morgana plays an assertive and clairvoyant woman who courageously stands by Angel Coulby’s Guinevere character in both happy and adverse times. The first season Merlin dvds contain among the following great bonuses:
Behind The Magic (Parts One and Two): All of the characters are covered in their full glory and are shown as down to earth people who just want to contribute towards a meaningful show.
Video Diaries divided up by Colin Morgan and Colin, Bradley, plus the Cast: I enjoyed seeing them share what they go through in perfecting various scenes for the series. It was also great watching all of them having a fun time at a theme park roller coaster.
Photo Gallery: There are superb photos of both the key villians and the benevolent characters during the first season.
Wallpapers: You have to insert this dvd into your computer, but there are an eclectic assortment of images that one can view for desktop background ideas.
There are 13 episodes divided among 4 dvds, with the fifth dvd featuring the bonuses and wallpaper. Of course I enjoyed each episode. However, my two overall favorite episodes from the first season are “Moment of Truth” and “The Labyrinth of Gedref”. “Merlin: The Complete First Season” is best for those who enjoy mystical tv shows with spiritual themes.
