Miami Rhapsody

Overview

David Frankel's romantic comedy Miami Rhapsody comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 4.0. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Although the movie looks and sounds quite fine, there are no special features, making the expensive list-price for this disc harder to swallow. Fans of the film will enjoy the disc.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
The casting of actress Mia Farrow is no coincidence in this romantic comedy that strongly recalls the films of Woody Allen while conspicuously lacking the keen insights that are the hallmark of his work. It's not that writer/director David Frankel's characters lack the introspection common to Allen's milieu. The protagonist played by Sarah Jessica Parker is grappling with deep issues about commitment and the institution of marriage, seeing a shrink and asking probative questions of her family members that mine their lives for hidden truths about fidelity. So why does there seem to be a lighter, more self-consciously comic, less intellectual approach here? Maybe it's the near-tropical Miami, FL, setting that's exploited colorfully by the production team, or the randy, harbinger-of-Sex and the City approach to the material. There's more sex and magic present here than in the Allen catalogue that's being imitated, but that's only a good thing depending on your point of view. For die-hard Allen fans, it means there's less depth and revelation; for those wishing that Woody would lighten up, Miami Rhapsody (1995) is just what the movie doctor ordered.
