Overview

The streets are hot once again as Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs make their DVD debut with the Miami Vice: Season One three-disc set from Universal. Now you can savor all 22 episodes of the first season with each show's original soundtrack intact, including the pilot episode that started it all. In fact, Universal went all out for this groundbreaking series, spending a reported 2.5 million dollars just to clear all of the music rights for seasons one and two! Their work paid off, with tracks from Phil Collins, Glenn Frey, and, of course, Jan Hammer busting through the 5.1 surround soundtrack and making things feel like the gaudy, neon-filled '80s once again. Video quality on the set varies, with some digital distortion rearing its ugly head every now and then while the rest of the picture seems to be clouded in a soft haze that might or might not be the fault of the transfer. Extras include five short featurettes that delve into the style, music, and impact that the show had on television and real life Miami at the time. Featuring vintage interviews of Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas, and Jan Hammer, the clips are a fun look back on the mania that was Miami Vice Fever. Interesting insight on production design (color schemes for every show?) as well as costuming can also be found here, though not surprisingly, Michael Mann is nowhere to be seen on the disc. You do get a bunch of sound clips from the show's official creator, Anthony Yerkovich, though a fair share of credit is given to the Hollywood mega-director throughout the featurettes. A fine release that sets the stage for hopefully more improved sets to come, Miami Vice: Season One is one cool package that any fan of the show will have a hard time resisting.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The most stylish TV show of the '80s, Miami Vice redefined the cop show forever. Writer/producer Michael Mann pulled off something unique with this series: His deliberate incorporation of the latest fashions and music made it trendy, but the stories -- especially in the early years -- were often gritty and uncompromising. There really wasn't any way around it, given that the show's detectives were working Vice for the Miami Metro-Dade police force. They were constantly involved with drug pushers, prostitution rings, gun runners, and a fair number of crooked law-enforcement officers. The 1984 pilot episode found smooth but tough Sonny Crockett Don Johnson teaming up with NYPD detective Rico Tubbs Philip Michael Thomas who has gone south to investigate murders tied to a Colombian drug lord. Rico stays on and rounds out a squad that also includes Larry Zito John Diehl, Gina Calabrese Saundra Santiago, and the quietly forceful Lt. Castillo Edward James Olmos. The first-season episodes were chock-full of well-known stars and character actors, including Pam Grier, John Turturro, Jimmy Smits, Ed O'Neill, Michael Madsen, Ving Rhames, and Sylvia Miles, to name just a few. Musician Glenn Frey, whose songs often turned up in the show's soundtrack, became the first of several recording artists to appear in a dramatic role. Season 1 highlights include the two-part "Hit List," which finds Tubbs working behind the scenes to protect Crockett and his relatives from an Argentinean assassin. "Give a Little, Take a Little" stunned viewers by pushing Gina into a compromising position when her undercover pose as a prostitute arouses suspicion. "Smuggler Blues" had Crockett and Tubbs being recruited by the DEA to pose as drug runners to flush out a vigilante believed to be working within the bureau. Of course, TV has grown up a lot in the 20 years since Miami Vice made its first big splash in the prime-time pond, but this groundbreaking series still has a lot to offer -- in addition to Jan Hammer’s unforgettable theme music.

    Still as stunning as ever...

Not having seen the series in 20-odd years, it brought back memories. The visuals and the music are still absolutely unbeatable. The acting now appears a little wooden in places, but that's probably due to the evolution of TV over the past two decades. Great entertainment.

One of the ten best television shows ever...

One of the best shows ever put together. Concept, direction, cast, music, writing, visual impact & acting--Miami Vice in its first three seasons was like nothing we'd ever seen before. And nothing since has matched it.
