Miami Vice was one of the few exceptions, a show that not only reflected current styles and trends but also inspired some of its own. Under the stewardship of executive producer Michael Mann, this groundbreaking crime drama captured the spirit of its times and redefined the "police procedural," a type of cop show that dated back to the '50s. The 22 episodes of 1985-86 maintained an extraordinarily high average, with nary a clinker among them. Season 2 begins with "Prodigal Son," a two-hour episode that briefly transplants Miami vice cops Crockett Don Johnson and Tubbs Philip Michael Thomas to Manhattan, where they pursue a Colombian drug lord who's killed a federal agent in their jurisdiction. Even more so than the other episodes, the season opener teemed with guest stars from the entertainment world -- some playing themselves, some playing fictitious characters. Broadway composer-showman Peter Allen, actor-playwright Charles Ludlum, KISS frontman Gene Simmons, and numerous others joined Pam Grier and Anthony Heald in Season 2's most star-studded hour. Phil Collins contributes an impressive performance in "Phil the Shill," another above-average installment, and a young John Leguizamo proves riveting as a vengeful brother in "Sons and Lovers." But the year's best outings are definitely "Out Where the Buses Don't Run" and "Back in the World." Bruce McGill, playing a deranged ex-detective who claims to know the whereabouts of a missing monster, dominates the former. This sublimely creepy episode costars David Strathairn and Little Richard. "World," directed by series star Don Johnson, forces Sonny to relive his days in Vietnam when a former war correspondent Bob Balaban tries to persuade him that a rogue officer G. Gordon Liddy in a memorable guest-star turn is running drugs. Since Miami Vice represented its period so well, the series has become inescapably dated, but that is also part of its charm. Once you get past the synthesizer score, Da-Glo fashions, and poofy hairstyles, you'll find that the best story lines and performances are just as powerful today as they were when Ronald Reagan was president.

    Don Johnson+Miami Vice=Total Winner

    Don Johnson and cast are very good. Enjoyed the guest stars, music, etc. Best story lines and performances are as fresh and powerful today as then. Season 3 please!! Hope Nash Bridges is introduced on dvd soon.

    The best season

    I am a big Miami Vice fan. Season 1 was good, but season 2 is when the show really took off. My favorite episode is "Where the buses don't run." Overall, season 2 is the best season to own. I know it won't be out for a while, but season 4 is where the show goes downhill and that season won't be worth it, but season 2 is definitely the one to get.

    MIAMI VICE--City for all seasons I and II

    Can't get enough. Don Johnson and crew still have it. Fast pace, music, and good stories. Hope season 3 is not far behind. Good entertainment. Could watch Mr.Johnson all day long...Nash Bridges on DVD...hint!!
