Mickey Mouse in Black and White

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
"It all started with a mouse," Walt Disney must have said a million times, and these are the cartoons that gave the Mouse his start. Mickey's plucky "can-do" spirit truly animates these 34 cartoons, which span 1928–35. They are primitive but bursting with personality and pioneering invention. Disc 1 contains the seminal 1928 cartoons "Steamboat Willie" -- the first sound cartoon and Mickey's official screen debut -- and "Plane ...

Disc 1 contains the seminal 1928 cartoons "Steamboat Willie" -- the first sound cartoon and Mickey's official screen debut -- and "Plane Crazy," which was actually the first Mickey cartoon produced. Film critic and historian Leonard Maltin hosts this essential two-disc set and provides historical context for Mickey's meteoric rise to international stardom. He also helpfully highlights his favorite cartoons, including "The Mad Doctor," "Mickey's Gala Premier," and "Gulliver Mickey." Other landmark cartoons include "Mickey's Revue," which marks Goofy's screen debut, and "Mickey's Service Station," the first teaming of Mickey, Donald Duck, and Goofy. Also recommended for Disney and animation buffs are the two-disc sets The Complete Goofy and Behind the Scenes at Walt Disney Studio.
