Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
An inspiring story drawn from real-life events surrounding the 1980 Winter Olympics, Miracle provides Kurt Russell with the best starring role he's had in years. The erstwhile child star, best known as Escape from New York's Snake Plissken or perhaps as Mr. Goldie Hawn, portrays Herb Brooks, the veteran hockey player turned coach charged with assembling the U.S. team for the 1980 Games. The United States had not been competitive in Olympic hockey for two decades, a period during which teams from the USSR dominated international play. The task had a special resonance for Brooks, because he had been the last player cut from the American team that won the 1960 Olympic gold. A handsome Hollywood star whose boyish looks once made him a teen idol, Russell is totally convincing as the grizzled, hard-boiled coach. He has the character nailed with regard to superficial things -- Brooks's hopelessly square buzz-cut and plaid jackets, his Minnesota accent, his no-nonsense manner -- but he also seems to have internalized the coach's feelings. The real Brooks, who died in a car crash shortly after the film's completion, consulted extensively with Russell. Sports movies these days tend to focus on the young team members, who only seem to pull together after experiencing some kind of trauma. Everything builds to the Big Game. But Miracle is different because it focuses on Brooks, who inspires awe and commands respect precisely by remaining aloof from his players. He isn't an avuncular figure; he drives the would-be Olympians hard and takes no advice from well-meaning but essentially useless hangers-on. It's not that the film doesn't have well-drawn supporting characters: Noah Emmerich is fine as Herb's assistant coach, and Eddie Cahill stands out as Jim Craig, the team’s spirited goalie. But this is Russell's show, and director Gavin O'Connor knows it. Despite the movie-ready true story, Miracle avoids many of the clichés you typically see in sports movies, and even during the well-staged hockey sequences it remains fixed on its principal character. Thankfully, that character is extremely well drawn in the script and portrayed with gusto by a much-underrated actor.
All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
Director Gavin O' Connor made a brilliant decision to cast hockey players rather than actors to portray the members of the 1980 USA Olympic team in Miracle. Although the film will not teach the viewer a thing about hockey itself, the action all looks like the real thing. That verisimilitude complements Kurt Russell's fine performance as coach Herb Brooks. Russell does a superb job of playing a man who is consciously manipulating his players in order to get the best out of them. His performance lets the audience know how difficult it is for him to occasionally confront the more painful aspects of his job, but also shows how that inner struggle is never revealed to his players. Brooks did not want a collection of stars when he put his team together, he wanted a unit that would work well together. This is exactly how the unknown (and often first-time) actors who represent the team come across. Nobody is asked to do anything too difficult from an acting standpoint, allowing Russell to control every scene with his dominating personality. The film has faults -- Patricia Clarkson is fine but underdeveloped as Brooks' wife, and the final voice-over is overly earnest in a way the film had almost entirely avoided up to that point. However, Miracle does offer downright inspired game footage. The camera weaves in and out of the action in ways that will surprise an audience only familiar with televised hockey. The period aspects of the story are handled with taste and restraint -- an achievement considering how easily the film could have pandered to a viewer's patriotism. Miracle succeeds at being Hoosiers on ice, an honorable achievement for any sports film.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
Although playing a hockey coach might seem like a slap shot for an actor, Russell does real acting here. He has thought about Brooks and internalized him.
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan
Powered by an excellent Kurt Russell performance, Miracle treats old-fashioned, emotional material with an intelligence that respects both the story and the audience.

Although playing a hockey coach might seem like a slap shot for an actor, Russell does real acting here. He has thought about Brooks and internalized him.

    Witness a Miracle-you can't miss this!

Miracle, directed by Gavin O'Connor is an inspiring movie based on the true story of when the U.S. won the Olympic gold medal for hockey in 1980. Gavin O'Connor has directed many superior films and of these films I do believe that Miracle is one of his absolute best. Without any hesitation or second thought about it I would give this movie five stars.
The costumes in this movie are extremely authentic for the setting of the movie. The clothing Kurt Russell wears is typical of the time period; the costuming of the hockey players on ice also stands out a great deal in my mind. At the time hockey players weren't required to wear face masks and their padding wasn't as well-built as it is today. They did an outstanding job of displaying different clothing styles of the time period.
The actors in this movie were carefully and wisely chosen. Kurt Russell stars as Herb Brooks, the coach of the United States Olympic team. Kurt Russell does a great job of portraying Herb Brooks' character as the coach who shows nothing but tough love for his team. He does this by making the team work harder when all they want to do is give up; this causes the team to grow closer as they are fighting for a common goal. Acting as Herb Brooks, Russell pushes the team to exceed their personal best, and this movie stresses the idea that working as a team is more important than being independent. It's a heartwarming movie for the whole family and you don't have to be a hockey fan to enjoy this exciting film.
The purpose of this movie is to display the idea that hard work and dedication really do pay off. To believe and have faith that good things will prosper is always a large factor, and often acts as motivation to doing well. To truly strive though, action must be taken because faith can only take a team so far. This movie does a magnificent job of demonstrating how commitment to a team and working together will lead to great success. This film is an inspiration for many sports teams throughout the nation today.
This movie also stresses the importance of living without regrets. The team must push themselves when they have the opportunity because otherwise they live their lives wondering what could have been. When a team is passionate and has ambitions set they must push themselves to achieve these goals. It teaches the audience that the best thing you can do for yourself is to do everything with your whole heart. When you don't say or do things you wish, that's when you develop regrets. This is something that applies to more than just sports teams; this is a lesson for everyone should understand. This is one of the many examples of the life lessons that this movie teaches, yet another reason that this movie is inspiring for all.

Thrilling movie from Beginning to End!

"Do you believe in Miracles? Yes!" These words have been forever plastered in to the minds of every young hockey player and the movie Miracle captured every bit of the thrill. This award winning film tells the story of the young but talented 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. The 2004 film starred Kurt Russell as the stone cold coach Herb Brooks, and Eddie Cahill as shut down goalie Jim Craig. Not many movies can combine every emotion into a 2 hour flick but Miracle conquers just that. It will have you laughing, crying, and they exploding from your seat. This movie captures every exhilarating moment of excitement, sadness and stress of playing in the Olympics. It sends a very powerful message to all athletes around the world, essentially stating that no dream is out of reach. At some points of the film it drifts from hockey and shows people what life was like in the 80's, showing television clips and radio broadcasts gives you live footage of 1980 events. I found this movie to have a perfect balance of action and explanation and would be a perfect film for people of all ages, it's a slap shot!

    Must watch movie!!!!

Absolutely a GREAT movie!! I remember watching the USA hockey team win the gold medal as a child with my father. This movie brings all those memories back like it happened just yesterday. My 17 year old daughter was the one that wanted to buy the movie and I am so glad she talked me into it. I enjoyed watching this movie and sharing the experience with her just like I did with my dad several years ago.

AFTER 24 YEARS, THEY FINALLY MADE IT A MOVIE

It took 24 years for a film industry to make a film about possibly THE greatest moment in the history of sports, ever. Herb Brooks took a group of college kids, whipped them into shape, and got them to the point of defeating the greatest team assembled in hockey history. This team also brought together a distraught nation. As people called it in 1980, 'The Cold War on Ice.' And as it is known today, 'The Miracle on Ice.' This event also triggered the greatest line in sports commentary, thank you Al Michaels. 'Do you believe in miracles...YES!!!'

    An inspirational classic!

This movie was truly one of the best movies I have seen all year. The best part I found, was that before I saw it, I knew nothing about hockey or the 'Miracle on Ice' at all, yet I was still glued the whole time in the theatre. Kurt Russell is so stunning in this movie you wonder if he's the actor or the actual coach. The actors that make up the U.S. team pulled off an unbelievable performance, giving you laughs, tears and cheers all at the same time. But what is really great about this movie is that it doesn't matter how old you are or how much you know about hockey to appreciate it, and I know from personal experience. And if you are a hockey fan, you will definitely enjoy all the games and practices, which were recreated so beautifully. The movie also gives a little insight as to the other things going on in 1979 and 1980, which also teaches the younger audience about what life was like. And unlike so many other sports films before, this has the depth and intelligence to make it a classic. Hockey-wise, drama-wise, action-wise and inspiration-wise, 'Miracle' is a true winner! Do you believe in miracles?

Do You Believe In Miracles? . . . YES!!

Hollywood got one right! If you experienced the original miracle, you'll feel like you finally got to see how it became one. Even the 'stretching' of the facts are believable. Kurt Russell IS Herb Brooks - great!! This movie is as 'feel-good' as The Rookie and Field of Dreams. You don't have to be a hockey fan to appreciate this - being an American is quite enough. And watch the extras with Al Michaels and players from the team.

    Heart-warming movie

Wonderful movie. Hockey fans will sure love this film, but the great thing about it is that it can be enjoyed by non-hockey fans, or even introduce them to the sport. The movie is very patriotic and it gives you such a feeling of appreciation for the U.S. and how we can triumph. This movie is good for children because it teaches children not to give up and how important it is being part of a team. Highly recommended film for the entire family.

    Hockey Meets Hollywood

Kurt Russell totally captures the essence of legendary coach Herb Brooks in an inspiring true story of the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team. You don't have to be a hockey enthusiast to enjoy this picture and parents don't need to worry about sex or foul language. It's a movie for the entire family and will open up a dialog about the historical events that surrounded this team. One of my favorite all time films!
