Warner Bros.' DVD edition of Miss Congeniality seems to have passed through the process to release without receiving much attention, though it does come with a pair of commentary tracks and a pair of featurettes as extras. The video is a clean anamorphic transfer that maintains the 1.85:1 aspect ratio of the original. The source print is free of dust speckles and scratches. The transfer, however, is lacking in contrast, and seems to have problems with levels from time to time -- some night scenes turn to mush, and some outdoor day scenes come close to washing out. Colors appear accurate, though subdued, but the overall image seems slightly soft. Blacks are reasonably solid, compression artifacts are minimal, and there appears to be no stairstepping from digital enhancement. The Dolby 5.1 is adequate to the task at hand, with good separation and good use of the surround channels for atmospheric and ambient effect. The bass channel is good, with solid, clean lows. Dialogue is very clear throughout, and never overwhelmed by other soundtrack elements. The French-language soundtrack maintains the audio quality, and has a good voice cast, but somewhat sloppy dubbing. The first commentary track features Sandra Bullock and screenwriter Marc Lawrence, while the second has director Donald Petrie soloing. The Bullock/Lawrence commentary has a jokey, chatty, sometimes surreal air to it, and is effectively wall to wall -- good for a certain amount of entertainment, though it does sometimes get irritating. Petrie's commentary, on the other hand, is a plodder -- long gaps, little information (delivered slowly at that), and not much of interest. The two featurettes seem like one longer piece simply cut in half. Each one includes some background information on the film, a handful of bloopers, and concludes with deleted scenes. The sound quality is fine on both, but the image quality is mediocre. Cast and crew information and the theatrical trailer cap off the special features.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
Following a long string of financially disappointing films, Sandra Bullock attempted a return to star status with this glossy, effective action comedy that she also produced through her company Fortis Films. If the script for Miss Congeniality is too by-the-numbers, predictable, and preprogrammed, it also makes exuberantly satirical use of its main idea of a butch FBI agent undercover at a beauty pageant, sending up that world's participants with relish. Particularly noteworthy are vigorous, funny supporting performances from Michael Caine and William Shatner as longtime pageant veterans suffering the vagaries of their profession with good humor and wit. When Bullock turns on her high-wattage charm, as she does here, she earns her status as an alternative Julia Roberts. (Indeed, her vibrant acting quickly earned her a Golden Globe nomination.) With a smidgen more edge and a dash of extra attitude -- perhaps casting her as a lesbian instead of a red-blooded heterosexual -- Bullock's film might truly have been a classic comedy. But in the hands of director Donald Petrie, who's overly friendly with the lowest common denominator, the watered-down final product is too eager to please. At its core, however, Miss Congeniality is an entertaining farce that prevails in its chief effort -- putting Bullock back on the mainstream map.

This is a very funny movie that kept me laughing throughout. It's almost slapstick comedy. Sandra Bullock does great physical humor in it that I've never seen her do before. Highly recommended.

I think Sandra Bullock's movie Miss Congeniality was great! It was good to see Miss Bullock in a comedic role. She was very funny and I hope she does more films like this! My favorite part was when she had the orientation meeting, but the whole movie was funny. Rent it today if you haven't seen it, it's off the hook! Trust me!

Sandra will drive you insane with her sexy body after she gets a makeover. With Benjamin Bratt as an FBI agent, Sandra is sent in to the Miss United States Beaty Pagent as an undercover FBI Agent. From an ugly and tasteless worm to a heartwarming and hot supermodel, Sandra is a big HIT!!!!!!

I've seen all of Sandra's films and this is by far the most funny and well done of all of them. Most of the time I'm very critical of movies, but I couldn't find anything that I didn't like in this one.

Miss Congeniality is by far the best film I've ever seen! Sandra Bullock and Benjamin Bratt made it an absolute hit! With Snadra Bullock's natural talent and Benjamin Bratt's cuteness it's a quick two thumbs up!

You'll wish you were in Sandra's shoes! This movie is a definite for any Sandra and Benjamin fan. The two really make the movie believable and you're glued to the screen waiting to see how their relationship blossoms with funny antics and jokes that put a different face on Law & Order's Det. Curtis, still a law man in this movie. The Snicker bar sceen is very funny! Oh and ''...maybe we can go out on a date after you become ugly again'', says Bratt to Bullock after the two catch the bad guys.

This is the most awful movie I have ever seen. I couldn't even make it through half of it. Terrible acting, one of Sandra's worst movies.

I think Miss Congeniality is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I've seen it at least three times, and I love watching it everytime. You could classify this as a chick flick, but I'm a guy and I love it! There is just something so touching and romantic about this movie, like the times she teases, ''You think I'm pretty....'' I just love this movie and I'm not ashamed to admit it!
