Overview

Patricia Routledge, best known to television viewers as the status-obsessed Hyacinth Bucket on the long-running British comedy series Keeping Up Appearances, takes on a very different role in this made-for-TV mystery. Hetty Wainthropp (Routledge) is a sensible and practical woman in her early sixties. When a close friend's son goes missing, Hetty decides the police aren't doing enough to track him down, and sets out to find him herself. When Hetty's plan proves to be a success, she gets a private detective's license and becomes a full-time sleuth, to the slight annoyance of her kitchen-phobic husband. Missing Persons became a pilot for a series of Hetty Wainthropp mysteries starring Routledge, which ran for four seasons; the character was adapted from the writings of novelist David Cook.

Patricia Routledge gives the performance of a lifetime and the entire cast is not far behind with their inimitable talents. You will laugh until your sides are sore and then topping her comedic talent Miss Routledge concludes with a highly polished Dramatic scene of genius caliber! It is not Hetty as we came to know her in the series; it's Hetty at her peak before they tuned her down for whatever reasons.

Finally available on DVD is the missing episode of "Hetty Wainthropp"... the first in the series, in fact. Dramatized from David Cook's novel, "Missing Persons" begins Hetty's story as a private detective, rising from success as a helpful neighbor to a full-time professional. Straying in subject matter from usual television mysteries, Hetty does not investigate murder, but still follows some highly watchable cases, notable for the characters involved. Robert, her husband, watches as his wife pursues her business dreams and we are introduced to Geoffrey, later to be Hetty's assistant, for the first time here, trailed through London as a missing person himself in a series of camera shots set against the overture to HMS PINAFORE. Old friendship also compels Hetty to find a long lost son, a story which is intertwined through the length of the film. As compared to the later shows, "Missing Persons" is a slower start, not as light or polished. Still, Patricia Routledge proves once again that she can make even a fair script palatable by her magnificent acting. For all of us in the States who missed Hetty's debut, "Missing Persons" is a worthwhile diversion to fill in character background and see a different side to Ms. Routledge outside her persona as Hyacinth Bucket.
